New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Hasn't been any release of new giant scale from Hangar 9 since last winter/early spring. But, on the Hangar 9 website if you click new items, there is a Super Cub listed, with no details but a late October delivery date? This would be a nice unit and I happen to have a Zenoah 26 laying around that I am looking for a home for. The regular J-3 cub is listed at 106 inch wingspan and 20-26cc so I assume it would be very close to that size.
Anybody else know any information on this unit? |

Now it shows as a discontinued kit, somebody is messing around over there with the website not getting everyting right, probably have some explaining to do to the boss.

Outstanding!!! Now I know what I want for Christmas!!!
Horizon has done there homework on this one, Robert style pin hinges, "O" Ring bungies on the Landing Gear, Detail Cockpit......Somebody was listening! |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Looks nice. I'm thinking about getting one.

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
And it looks like it's set up for electric. Think I'll bite on this one. But don't count on October delivery....

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
So many have drool'ed over the thought of a 1/4 Super Cub ARF, & you guy's really steped up to the plate on this one, it's at the TOP of my list. |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Guys,
The models are on the water now and we are expecting to begin shipping the first week of November. We have added many details and modifications to this model from the 1/4 Scale J3 Cub we introduced in the summer of '07 so place you orders today and enjoy! RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Bill,
I noticed that the G-26 is out of stock as are most of the Zenoah engines. What’s going on with these? What other gas engine do you recommend for the Super Cub? |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
I think they are changing over to the new series of engines Zenoah engines they have advertized recently as ZP and they are not stocking the older ones anymore. Horizon is bad for out of stock, I am waiting on Pulse 125 part for almost a year now. They claim to have fixed the issue, but you still see lots of items out of stock. Almost never is Tower out of stock on anything. The cub does look great, though. I like the collapsible wing struts I have the Tcraft and that is one thing I dont' like the wing struts that don't fold flat on that model. Also, to include flaps and some other nice features for $649 price seems pretty good to me for the size of this model and the options and features. I think they have the Tcraft a little overpriced at $625 for a smaller model.

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
DLE 30 or DLE 35 would be easy, and fit fine but a lot of motor, PTE 36, EVO 26GX any of these. I would not use the Zenoah 20, its a little under powered for 16-18 pound model.

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Any opinions if the FG-21 would be a good candidate for this plane? I know Hangar 9 recommends the FG-30, but this plane is more of a floater.

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Hi,
And then we have OS GT33 gas engine that should work on this plane als, maybe even the smaller OS GT22 will be enough: http://www.osengines.com/engines/airplane.html As a side note if anyone want huge tundra tires for a 1/4 scale CUBYou can order now from Topmodel CZsince they have in them stock now. I ordered some days ago and it is on it's way to me now. They are 200 millimeter / 7.9 inch diameter. Sold in pair. Cost is 65 Euro = US $85. http://www.topmodelcz.cz/index.php?P...il&id=6353 Dubro 6 inch "Big wheels" hub(4 mm / 5/32 axel diameter) can be used in this Topmodel CZ tundra tires if needed: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...p;postcount=84 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...972&page=6 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...972&page=7 http://shop.dubro.com/products/produ...87.0.0.0?pp=12& Maybe the 1/4 scale Dubro CUB wheel hub (it has also 4 mm /5/32 axel diameter)fit also on the Topmodel CZ rubber wheel, I do not know: http://shop.dubro.com/products/produ...87.0.0.0?pp=12& /Bo |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
I put the Dubro 1/3 scale cub wheels on my Hangar 9 1/4 scale J3 cub.........had to make some longer axles is all. They have worked great. Looks super.........
I will do the same on this PA-18........paint the yellow cub cap white and it will look great. This plane is bound to be a hit with most. Compare the price with the cost of the Dave Patrick cub when it was available and the cost of the Aeroworks cub at nearly $1000 shipped to your door. I think Horizon will sell a bunch of these............free shipping doesn't hurt. There is a $22 oversize fee that is not waived. I had a 15% coupon to use for this so, I have mine on order. |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Dave or Bill,
Does it already have hardpoints built in for the floats? (Just wanting to verify) |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
They advertise it as being ready for float installation.
If its as nice as the smaller Super Cub it will make a great kit |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
The Model has hard points built into the fuselage to accept our 1/4 scale floats.
I would consider the overall height of the engine cylinder head when determining the engine you want to install into this model as the engine will be mounted inverted. The Blue circular cap(which is the oil filter) located on the bottom of the Super cub cowl will need to be ground away with a tall engine. The new Zenoah ZP 26 is a good fit for this model, but keep in mind that you will need move the RX battery as far forward as possible and you still might need to add lead to the nose for proper C/G as this engine is much lighter than the original Magneto Zenoah 26 that we show in the instruction manual. |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
I would really like a twin cylinder gas engine that will fit under the beautiful cowling without having to carve it up and hang a big ugly cylinder out the bottom. Also with enough power to fly on floats!! Any ideas???
|
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
If you watch the video on the Horizon web site, the demo plane is powered with a Saito 182 twin I believe. No cowl cutting and it looks to have good performance..................that motor should be what you want................go to the Horizon web site and click on the Super Cub. The video is pretty good.

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
ORIGINAL: bbrundle The Model has hard points built into the fuselage to accept our 1/4 scale floats. While I think there may be a better color choice that could have been made, this looks really nice and I may consider getting one to put on floats for club float flys. |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
GASOLINE engine that will fit in the cowl with no cutting. If that 182 glow twin is marginal on glow power it will have even less power on gas! I have 1/4 floats for the J3 that i want to use on this plane.
|
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
I have the older H-9 Cub of the same size. I used a CRRC 26cc engine and an 18x6 prop. Vey scale in flight both with wheels and floats. The engine is NOT impressive, and a DLE 20 would out perform it. I think a DLE 30 would be a great engine for the Super Cub.

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Bill, Are the black N numbers a vinyl type material that can be removed like on the H9 giant Cessna 182?
Thanks! |

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
I think based on what was said above, they have it set up for a G26 magneto. G26 EI will be lighter and need lead, but even this is very heavy compared to a DLE30. So I do not agree with above stated that a DLE 30 would be a good engine for this model because you will just have to add a bunch of lead anyway, unless you really think it will need 30cc power, which I dont think it will need that much. My Taylorcraft is on a G20 and has enough power, but that requires a little more because the wingspan is only 80" and that is more aerobatic. This big floaty wing on this plane will need less power, so I think any more than 26cc is not needed. I would stick with the recommended engine, Hangar 9 usually has that covered pretty good.

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
1.20 4-Stroke going in mine. I couldn't bring myself to put a gas engine in this airframe if I was made to. Nothing worse than a nice scale model on a flyby sounding like a Stihl chainsaw. I will never understand how/why people do that.
|
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
"flyby sounding like a Stihl chainsaw." Now thats funny.
|
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
I have this plane on order. I am looking at either an FG 21 or an FG 30.
|
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
I thought for scale sound and looks, you have to go electric. Add a sound system to it and it hits all the high points of a cub. Otherwise, it sounds like a model.
That said, I think getting the right sound would make the model heavy. |
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
I Have a MVVS 35 gaser and a DLE 30 , A Saito 1.80 , a Super Tiger 3000 converted to gas all not in use at present.....I am wondering what would be the best motor for the Cub.......This Hanger 9 Super Cub will be going on a set of fiberglassed foam floats and I think I would like to put a gas motor on it...I already have a 1/4 J3 Cub with a 4 stroke OS 1.20 on it and I am building another BUSA 1/4 Cub that will have a Gemini twin on it so I can live with the gasser on one ...I know Cubs sound so nice with a 4 stroke motor but gas has its advantages...Besides I can always change out the motor later if I want ...I am more a fan of kit built planes but this ARF looks pretty nice for the price...It seems heavy enough to be well built...I find if they are really lite they are flimsy and dont stand up to my rough use...Does anybody have an opinion on which motor would suit this plane better, the MVVS 35, The DLE 30 or the Super Tiger 3000.... I have not run the Super Tiger But both the DLE 30 and the MVVs 35 run great...I am leaning towards the MVVS 35...because it is a little heaver...If not I will buy a Zenoah G 26
|
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
bikerbc, since your going with floats, and list a nice choice of engines, I'd say whichever one C/G's the best without add'ed weight.
|
RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Yes thats why I was leaning towards the MVVS 35 , I think it is the heavier and most powerfull of my motors...

ORIGINAL: roknHS Received my notice of shipping today........Super Cubs are in the U.S warehouse. Should arrive at my door in about a week. Supposed to pick mine up tomorrow from my hobby shop. Can't wait to assemble her. It will be neat to compair it to my D.Patrick PA-18. I sure hope it flys as nice as my DP, but I have no doubt that it will as I have never had a bad flying H9 airframe. Only thing I think I will change are the black N numbers. Going to have some slanted N numbers cut out of the correct color of blue. I only hope they are easily removable and not Ultracote. Kudos to whoever picked the blue and white scheme, she is really pretty in those colors. I also picked up a really nice lighting system for position and landing lights. They are extremely bright and will make her look the part for those twilight flights. |

The N numbers on my 60" Super Cub are ironed on Ultrakote.

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Picked up my PA-18 today. This is one nice ARF. They just keep getting better and better. The workmanship and quality is outstanding. Looks like my DP Super Cub finally has some decent competition. Great Job H9 you have a winner for sure. There was a lot of thought put into the design of this model and it really shows.

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub
Yes, it only comes in white and blue as shown in the photos.
