Those arms certainly look fancy! and with that massive one on the rudder this may yet be the worlds first 3d flybaby :p

3D?? Oh goodness gracious no! :)

I started to install my aileron linkage today. I was going to use the same Dubro 'Heavy Duty' hardware on the ailerons that I had used on the elevators. It didn't work out for various reasons. So I went back to the standard Dubro T-horns.

Next up is the rudder pull-pull cables. Hope I don't screw it up, never done one of these before.

the hardware on your aileron linkage looks more than manly enough. You may wish to move the arm up to the outermost hole on the aileron horn for best mechanical advantage over the surface. Frankly i doubt it will make much difference but it might be worth a thought.

As for the closed loop cables they are easy enough, just make sure you only screw the turnbuckle thing only half way into the clevis so that you have adjustment in both directions!</p>

Yep, I like strong connections. :D

Was reading up on the pull-pull, seems the links being at the hinge line is a critical component.

Good eye Jon.

Yes, but that is reserved for future use. I have been wanting to try out a rudder gyro, so I thought I would stick it in here and hook it up at some later date after I have flown the model. Just another gizmo. I like gizmo's. :D

haha, i hate gizmos :p i flew a plane witha rudder gyro once and hated it, and yet on my heli's its no problem. it could be a setup thing

I have gotten a little more work done since last check-in.

Let's see..........

Got my two 2S LiPo batteries for the on-board radio system stuff and figured out where to place them and some velcro patches.

Tried modifying one of the aluminum servo horns but it did not come out as nice as I hoped it would. So I am using Dubro extra heavy duty servo arms instead on the elevator servos.

I got the landing gear cross brace made and installed.

I made some wing attaching bolts out of wing nuts and socket head bolts JB Weld'ed together.

I fitted my ring exhaust collector to the engine and checked out how it fits on the airplane and it's perfect!

I measured for a spot to run the glow plug harness through the firewall and then drilled it. Forstner bits are great for drilling into wood.

And I made a faux aluminum firewall out of HVAC aluminum tape.

I think that's it for now.

Looking good Tom. My only slight concern is your u/c cross brace. It might make the u/c very stiff and cause damage to the airframe in the event of a bump. is there a may to mod it and have some kind of spring in he middle? I assume you have put in the brace to take the added weight of the model with the 400 attached?

RE: Hobby People's VQ-Global 28% Fly Baby ARF

Hi Jon, the U/C cross brace is an addendum from the manufacturer. It included the aluminum tube and an added instruction sheet on how to install the brace.

Just like the full size Fly Baby, the only shock absorption is in the tires!

Looks like it might trip you up pretty easy on a grass runway.

I agree with texas, you could try and fabricate something like a piper cub style u/c. then again, it may work just fine!

After a three month interruption in my project I have started back on it today. :)

My wife is currently out of town so I am taking full advantage of the fact that I can spread out in the living room. She would have a conniption fit if she walked in and saw this! :p

And since it is over 100°F outside I would rather work in the cool of the house.

I have actually been trying to get my head wrapped around this project again, and trying to get back into the groove where I left off. I knew I needed to get the rigging wires for the wings done so that is what I started on today.

Instead of the kit supplied lobster claw for a woman's necklace I decided to use some sailboat turnbuckles and fishing swivels. It extended the connection slightly but it is just as simple to hook up and will be stronger I feel.

I first glued the swivel attaching eyes into the wings. Then I had to clip an itty bitty little fishing swivel ring onto the fuselage hoop along with the turnbuckles and swivels. For a guy with fat fingers this was no easy feat. :p

Then I hooked up the wires and clevises. Only did one side today. Will do the other later.

I do not have small enough actual SS safety wire so I just used a piece of the rigging wire to safety the turnbuckle from twisting.
