What brand of paint did you use? I don't want to melt my canopy! :)
I have used Pactra RC car paint spray cans for many years on canopies & never had a problem (you paint the inside of the canopy).

I bought mine today from the local hobby shop and got started by weighing everything in the box.
Everything is in ozs.

Fuse 11.89
Fin/Rudd 2.15
Stab/Ele 3.08
Canopy 7.79
W Tube 3.23
Cowl 4.27
Gear 6.54
Motor Mount 2.75
Hardware 2.97
Misc ply .50
Wheels/tailwheel 3.13
Spinner 1.67
Wheel pants 3.57

Total 53.54 ozs. (3.35lbs)

Now I don't plan on using the wheel pants or the spinner so minus them it's 48.3 ozs (3.02lbs)


The first thing I did was lighten the canopy. That brought the weight down from 7.79oz to 4.66ozs. A savings of 3.13 ozs. Well worth the effort.

So my kit componenets weigh 2lbs 13.28ozs. Pretty decent I would say for an arf.

The pics of the canopy mods below.

Will be using a Saito 1.25.

My fuselage & canopy weigh 2 lbs 2 oz!! Must be made out of oak as your fuse & canopy seem to be about 20oz vs 34 oz for mine.[>:] Even though the rest of my component weights are close to yours, I am not happy about the almost extra 1 lb fuselage I have.

Mine should arrive this week. When it gets here, I will weigh the fuse and canopy to give you another data point. Thanks for the tip on canopy paint. It makes sense to use R/C car paint as they've been painting the inside of clear plastic car bodies for years.

hey guys i also used the car paint and painted inside the servos i use are futaba s9451 they are spendy but very fast and strong

I am looking at either the Hitec 5625 or 5645. Not sure if the extra torque of the 5645 or speed of the 5625 would be better or a combination of the two for different control surfaces. The 5625 looks to be a closer match to your 9451's and thats what I've been leaning towards (maybe a 5645 for rudder).

Ok I went out and weighed the fuse again. It weighed the same. Then I noticed that the firewall when standing the fuse on end was hitting where the lid to my scales hinge, and that was supporting some of the weight.

The fuse is not as light as I had originally posted. The rest of the weights should be accurate however as they wouldn't have encountered the problem.

I thought the fuse was too light. The fuse weighs 25ozs.

So add the 25ozs with the lighten canopy of 4.66 ozs, and the fuse assembly weighs just under 30ozs. very comparable to your weights.



This is why I never used to weigh anything. It just gets too complicated.

So all the kit components minus the wheel pants, and spinner weigh 4lbs 13.38ozs. That's with the canopy lightening mods. Without lightening the canopy it would be right at 5lbs even.

My son saw this plane and thinks either this one or the Seagull 540 is the plane for him. For the couple of you who have had a chance to fly Yak, how is it for sport flying and basic aerobatics? Is there much knife-edge coupling or rolling? How is it to land (i.e., does it land hot or will it slow down)? Bouncing tendencies on landing? Is the landing gear weak?

Motor is mounted, and I got the tail feathers glued on. I used gorrilla glue to glue them.


Aegis, Bouncing on landing has more to do with how the pilot lands than it does the airplane.

I agree with that for the most part. But, some planes have a tendency to bounce more due to the flexibility of the landing gear or placement relative to CG.

hey guys got tha plane all done accept the motor and fuel tank just spent three hours in 25 degree weather to break in satio 125 will run a few more tanks of fuel in it then mount tp plane should be ready in week or two then just need warm weather will starton another plane when done with this just wish i lived where was warm year round oh well roadrunner

With the tail feather drying I turned my attention to the wings. I replaced the stock CA hinges with Radio South (blue) 1/4 scale CA hinges. I also got the ailerons servos installed and hooked up.

I also got the landing gear, and tailwheel installed also. I swaped the stock tail wheel out for a sulivan unit. There wasn't anything wrong with the stock setup I just prefer the simplicty of the sulivan units.

Capthis on your plane you are using the satio 125 did you use the stock holes on fire wall or did you relocate and will the stock ex. work and did you have to cut cal to fit roadrunner

Runner, Yes I used the stock holes. I have not cut my cowling yet, but I am going to have too. The stock exhaust should work just fine.

I am also going to stop by the hobby shop today and see if I can get some black Pactra paint for my canopy!

I too just bought this plane yesterday along with a Zenoah G20ei engine. I will be watching this thread closely as this is my first gasser and the biggest bird in my hangar. This will be an on-going project for some time as I don't have all the equipment on hand that I want to use in it. Will be buying parts as money is available so I'll be interested to see which servos you guys use (I like HiTec digitals), batteries, switches, etc. and any building tips or mods you come up with. I think I'll leave my pilot and cockpit stock, though. I can always shave off extra weight later if I need to. I'll post anything I think I can add to this thread, but I think I'll be building this one slower than a lot you guys. So thanks in advance for all you do here!!

Hi all,
Just started my Seagull Models YAK 54.
This is my first ARTF and also my first go at posting a construction project.
After lots of thought I decided on an OS 120 AX this seems to fit the bill as the model is designed for .91-125 motors, The 120 is the same size crankcase as the .91 so it was not a difficult decision.

First evenings work. After opening and inspecting the contents of the large box I decided to use the supplied hardware pack.
First mark and drill engine mount to suit the OS 120 ax keeping the motor as far back as possible without fouling the prop/spinner on the cowl, 130 mm from the bulk head to the front of the prop thruster is about right. Using the supplied bolts and washers bolt the motor to the mount and the mount to the bulkhead. ( when final fixing loctite nutloc will be used)
Next mark out and drill the cowl mounting screw holes (use the method in the instructions it works a treat).Fit the cowl and mark out for cooling/glowplug and muffler holes. Remove cowl and trim cowl I used a drill and a dremel type drum sander. You may want to wear a face mask as it gets dusty. Once all holes are all tidy refit cowl.
Follow instructions and fit tank hardware, the plastic pipe bends and sets after warming with a lighter! I like to use over-long fuel tube and push it through from the bulkhead, connect to the tank tube and pull back the tank with it once the tank is in position you can fix it with scrap balsa (even that is supplied).

Evening Two. Having never used CA hinges before I decided to give them a try, this after gluing one to some scrap balsa and trying to pull it apart! I followed the instructions but before gluing I marked the centre of each hinge, this makes sure you have the same amount of hinge on both sides of the joint. I glued in the ailerons first followed by the tail feathers, be careful not to glue the lower one until you install the horizontal stab and fin. I fitted the control horns before installing the fin and horizontal stab as it is easier to drill them flat. After removal of covering where the horizontal stab fits slide it in and centre it and check for square then mark covering film top and bottom, slide it out and remove film with a razor sharp knife, I cut shy of the line to ensure there were no gaps. When happy follow the same procedure for the fin. After checking all measurements mix up a generous amount of slow set epoxy and refit horizontal stab and fin check all is OK and leave overnight to set. I then set about the aileron servos, as the wires where not long enough I used extensions with heat shrink tube over the plug and socket.

Evening Three. Time to fit radio! Two Futaba digital servos for ailerons and the rest are Futaba 3001s a Futaba r1490p pcm receiver. 4.8 volt 2500 ma hour flight pack and heavy duty switch complete the radio, all fitted using manufactures instructions. Just a mention about the throttle linkage, because of the OS 120 AX the hole in the bulkhead is not usable; I re-drilled and used a snake type of pushrod. After all servos are installed cut to size the carbon pushrods and CA onto clevises, cut to length the horizontal stab brace wires and fit. Make up the closed loop wires and fit to servo.
The u/c simply bolts on as do the wheel pants and wheels. It’s now you remember to fit the tail wheel! Which is a nice item and I think works well.

I have just done a quick check of the CG position after fitting the alloy joiner and bolts for the wings and I think it is about right; I will have to get help to hold it as the balance is measured at the wing tip and my arms are not long enough! But it is approx one thirds of the wing at the root I can adjust the battery and the prop and spinner have to be fitted so I have room to play with.

I will post more info when I test fly, this will be around May because it is cold and wet here in the UK.Thanks for all your info and help with your posts and any info I can help with just Ask.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I got a Saito 125 for Christmas and I have the Yak on order from my LHS. I won't be in a hurry and will collect quality parts/mods for it and take my time. I like the Hitec digitals as well and found a great deal on them at Troy Built Models. I am also going to put CF landing gear on it, but I have to wait to get the airplane to see what size I need to order. If I find a good deal / fit, I'll let everyone know.

Troy Built ........ thanks, Chumley, I'll definately check them out! I was wondering about the 1/4 scale hinges, are they thicker material or made out of entirely different material than whats in the kit?

Hey guys i have ran 10 tanks fuel in my new satio 125 to break in any ides on faster break in and when can yoy start to run 20 or 30% nitro in a new 4 stroke

The 1/4 scales hinges like I used are just slightly thicker, but a lot stronger. The stock ones would probably be fine, but I just prefer to use what I know holds up well.


Runner, just fly that engine. Set it just a tad rich, and fly it. I might run two tanks on the ground before I fly a Saito. They really aren't what i would consider truly broken in until you run about a gallon through them, but are fine to fly as long as you leave them a little rich.

Capthis 8.8 is ok with the satio 125 it should hang on the prop just fune dont you think i hope mine only comes in at 8.8 the runner

I'm not so much worried about hanging it on it's prop, as I am sure it will have enough motor for that. I am just concerned about the wing loading being a little high for all out 3D stuff.
