2nd Annual Cierva Contest
Below is a message from Emilio Cabezas reporting on the 2nd annual Cierva Fly-in/contest held early this month near Madrid in Spain.
BillF
The 2nd edition of the Cierva Prize for RC autogyros took place on Sunday 5th June, as scheduled. RC Club Navalcarnero, located 20 miles SW of Madrid, hosted the event. Carlos Artiñano de la Cierva, president of the Cierva Foundation, was a member of the jury. 12 gyromodelers, along with 14 models gathered at the flying field, although not all of them flew. Model types ranged from enlarged, modified versions of the well known DC Gyro to stand-off scale and semi-scale jobs; several Cierva C-4 (built from plans, Eduardo Pinilla´s design) were entered. Mario San Nicolas won the event, flying an enlarged (.50 engine) DC Gyro type model (he was the winner of the 1st Cierva Prize too). I took second place, flying my semi-scale Cierva C-30 (25 FSR engined). Eduardo Pinilla´s C-4 won the "best design prize". Weather was nice, with light winds variable in direction, in spite of which most modelers managed to make R.O.G.´s. A couple of full-size, Spanish-made double-seater light autogyros (gyroplanes as they are often referred to) plus a single-seater showed up; the first two landed at the RC flying field. They made a wonderful airshow.

RE: 2nd Annual Cierva Contest
Bill,
Thanks for sharing this report with us.. The C-4 looks better that my A of A I built. The 3 blade rotor and different head looks better too.
The pilot adds a good touch too.
Both Scale Autogyro's in the first picture are great looking Gyro's.
I noticed there was not much GRASS in the area.
Is there a web site where we could find out more about these models?
Thanks again Bill

Hi Jim..
I'll drop Emilio a note and ask if there is a web site for any of the Spanish model clubs. Yes, it's dry in Spain. You know the "rain there falls mainly on the plain."! <G>

Hi Jim...
Emilio replied that there is a site which lists a number of flying clubs in the Madrid region. The address is:
www.aereamadrid.com Click on "aeromodelismo" then on "clubes" I wasn't able to find much on autogyros, however.

Hi Bob...
Thanks for the nice thought!! However, I was there only in spirit. Perhaps another year several of us could participate.
