Default New Lipo User - Help

Im in the process of finalizing a build of a 450 heli, and am now down to the batteries. Would someone please let me know what I need to do in order to use/charge/discharge Lipos safely. I am considering the HobbyKing Nano-Tech 3s packs -

I currently have a Hobbico Accu-cycle elite charger - and also an Esky balancing charger. Would like to use what I have until I figure out if I will stick with battery power as my planes are all nitro.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have quite a few nanotech packs and so far i really like them. I'm using the 45C nanos and they seem to give me plenty of punch when i want it and i can charge at 10C .

Basically you shoudl ensure that you land before LVC(low voltage cut off)

Never leave a pack fully charged, always discharge the pack to resting voltage 3.75 or 3.85V a cell

never leave a battery unattended whilst charging.

If you damage a battery consider draining the pack to 0V and binning it. You dont want a damaged lipo lying around. use common sense here.

Both of those chargers are  EXTREMELY light duty.

They will work but I think they are overnight type chargers.

You can buy chargers that are 10 times better for about $100 delivered.

Your battery choice is good.
Although just starting out in helicopters you will not need 50C batteries for a while.
Just a waist of money at this point.
I would get 20C or 25C batteries.
Use them till you feel you need more power.
That could easily be a year down the road.

Those chargers are really pricy for what your getting

If your using 2200mah 3S packs you could get away with the accucel 6

If you really had that sort of coin to part with i go for an icharger which is just worlds apart from what you were looking at

So Im looking at these below: What do you guys think? Im not an electrics guy until now...so as far as wattage and all that Im a little confused.

1- I would like to be able to fast charge my lipos at the field. How many watts do i need to fast charge 2200mah lipos at lets say 3-4C?

2- What sort of power supply would I need? Am I better off making something myself? Any recommendations?

Accucell 8: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...r_Charger.html

Accucell 6: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html

Thanks for the help!

1- 12.6 volts x 4C x 2.2 ah = 111 watts MAX and you will need 8.8 amps. A 100 watt , 8 amp charger is close enough.

This is for 1 pack, double or triple the figures of course for 2 or 3 packs. Your 2 chargers are pretty close to doing 4C charges. The bottom one might be maxxed out in both current and power , and that is pretty cool if you ask me. Most people don't like to max out their equipment.

For a ps you would need to select any one with wattage equal or higher to the maximum you'll be pulling. Your 4C job pulls a max of 111 watts , but if you had the bottom charger it would be 80 watts max. It would also have to be within voltage range and most of them are. Again most people like to oversize the ps somewhat so it isn't maxxed out all the time.

Let's do another calc for a single pack at 3C charge. 12 voltsx3cx2.2ah= 79 watts. If you wanted to skimp to the minimum the 80 watt 7 amp charger with a 100 watt ps would be the minimum to buy.
