Default nickle metal hydrite (sp) voltages

When measuring voltages on a 4.8 v battery how much does the cut off charge voltage mean. In other words if cut off is leaving you with 5.8 is that better than left with 5.4. Ifthe battery finishes with 5.9 will it last longer than one that cuts off at 5.4? I hope you understand what I want to know. Help, John
