Default Hitec X4 going into "breakdown" mode

G'day folks,

just bought a new Hitec X4 4 port charger. Friend has one and he has been caning it with not a problem, seemed to be bullet proof so I bought one too.

Charged a 4S lipo pack no probs so then hooked up some other packs. charged at 1 C
  • 2 packs of 5 cell, 6V, 2400mA/h Sub C NiCd - charged at 1amp
  • 1 pack 5 cell, 6V, 2000 mA/h Eneloop NiMh - charged at 1 amp
  • 1 pack 1 cell, 1.2V, 3600 D cell, NiCd - charged at 0.5 amp
  • 1 pack 5 cell, 1100mA/h AA cell, NiCd - charged at 0.5 amp.

Charger works fine if only 1 or 2 ports are used, if I put 4 packs on at once all charging at 1 amp or even 0.5 A, then one port will go into breakdown. I can be any type of pack or port. I swapped packs, ports and leads around.

Has anybody experienced this before? According to the manual it states the charger has a fault. I am sending it back under warranty but would like to guage how common this problem may be.

cheers
Peter

I sent mine back and hitec gave me a new one............still does the breakdown on the new unit.........A electronics expert at out field after me describing the break down, said I should look for a Ground loop problem might be giving the NIMH or NICAD modes problems......mine also does 123 or Lipos with no problem. Ground loop problem sometimes were a pia on music speakers. Worth a look anyway.

Opps forgot to add mine does the breakdown on NIMH/NICAD anytime I hook more than one battery up at a time as soon as I put on the second NIMH or cad the first channel will trip into breakdown mode if I reset that channel the second channel will go break down......and both batts are same chemistry and amps.
