I have your standard 12 volt starter battery in my flight box.

Can I use a float charger/battery maintainer that is commonly use on
a car battery?

If the maximum charging current is 0.1C or less for the battery being charged, yes. To high a charge current (even if voltage is limited) will harm most Pb type batteries, especially hard on gell cell type batteries.

I have used a Schummacher 1.5A battery maintainer for years on 7Ah gel cell batteries. While in theory it would be just over .2C charge rate, in practice it never charged above .7A or .1C while chaging a gel cell field battery, as long as the battery was not discharged too low. My practice was to put my field box battery on float as soon as I my ATV (aircraft transportation vehicle) into the garage after a day at the field.
