LIPO Smoke, heat but no fire
Last fall when charging a 3s LIPO, when checking smelled a faint odor but didn’t think much about it. About 10 minutes later smell was pretty bad and then battery began smouldering and lots of smoke so with BB tongs disconnected from charging unit and tossed it on concrete drive. Took quite a while for it to go out and couple hours to cool - man it was hot yet no flames. When checking afterwards, there was a lot of gel like substance oozing out (that stunkj from a small brad size hole in the end. Looked in plane that it was last flown in and noticed a bolt through firewall that held motor mount that matched up to hole in battery that I suspect was the culprit. Morale of story is to protect battery compartment.
Believe that couple ammo boxes will be in the garage this spring before flying season as a precaution and batteries will be inspected closely prior to charging. It was an eye opening if not frightening experience.

Oh yes , a hole in the wrapping will let air in , and LIPOs don't like air in them one bit . You make a very good point (no pun intended) of making sure there are no sharp protrusions in the battery compartment that can compromise the battery's covering . Overcharging , overdischarging , and physical damage sure seem to be the big three in LIPO destruction ....

Used Velcro as well - straps and pads. But very tight space and probably on landing may have moved a bit that caused the problem. Enlarged the area a hair and added a small piece of ply to protect in future.

Problems occur when the batteries get more powerful. No one can specify which bag will contain a RAPID full blown fire with any size battery. Someone can post the temperatures of a full power ignition.

cyclops. punch some small holes in can lid then use 100 monofilament to hold it up it will melt if a lipo goes up..A123 will not fail like a lipo..id remove the steel screen might short and kill the A123's.

I have never flamed a LIPO. Even after a bad crash.
My chargers go to a very low current rate if any cells are uneven. I am never in a hurry with battery charging. I let the charger do the trickle routine.
