Default nimh battery charge rates

I have a 2300 mha nimh battery in my Cub and I charged it at the 2300 setting on my charger. I reasoned that if a 2300 lipo had a 2300 mah rating and was set to charge on the 2300 setting and was safely fully charged using this method then a 2300mah nimh battery could be charged the same. Well I charged my nimh at the 2300 setting and after approximately 45 min the battery started to get very warm. After about one hour it was very, very warm so I stopped the charge, not sure of why this was happening. A friend told me that these types of batteries should be charged at 10c or 10% of the mha rating which would be at 230mah. At this setting it would take a full day to fully charge, depending on the amount of depleation. Is this information correct? If so did I damage my battery pack with the higher mah charge setting? I tested the battery on a volt meter that applies a load and the battery took quiet a long time to drop in voltage so I assume that it is still a good battery. I realise that a lipo and a nimh are chemically different, but why the different charge settings? After all, they are both rated at 2300mah, and if the nimh's need to be charged at a specific rate why doesn't the manufacturer give specific instructions for the correct charge rates?

You can do a 1C charge on Nimh or NiCd if you have a computerized charger that detects the peak and shuts off. It sounds like your charger doesn't do that, in which case it will damage your batteries by overcharging them. The old advice to stick with C/10 charging comes from the wall wart days when everybody overcharged. Overcharging is fairly safe at that rate, provided you don't leave it plugged in for days and days.
