Only for using or testing or long term storage perhaps.

And.. if you plan to store it, don't discharge it down past say 3.8 a cell.

It is just there so that you can check the capacity of the battery. i.e. discharge, and then charge to see how many MAH's it will hold.

Don't discharge to store. You should store LIPO's at 80% of its capacity.

BTW - LiPo's are shipped from the factory with a 30% - 50% charge in them. The reason is stability. DO NOT discharge LiPo's to store them. Store them with about a 1/2 charge. You can do that with - YOUR DISCHARGER!

one person recommend to discharge them to 80% the other recommended to discharge to 50%, which is correct? Also, I have read that you are supposed to discharge if you aren't using them for longer than a week, is this true because somebody in this thread said you shouldn't discharge unless you are not using them for long-term. My definition of long-term is anything longer than a year , what is his? Thanks.

EDIT: Also, how fast should you discharge the battery? My charger allows me to pick anywhere between .1 and 2.0 amps. I have a 6000mah 2s2p 7.4volt battery pack. Thanks.

You should store them at a voltage of about 3.8v per cell..

You should charge them at 1C..

A 6000mah pack at 1C would be 6 amps..
A 2100mah pack at 1C would be 2.1 amps..
A 3850mah pack at 1C would be 3.8 amps...

You always charge at 1C.. With your charger on a 6000mah pack, looks like you'll charge it at 2 amps..

My charger charges at 10amps. It only discharges at 2amps. So I was just curious, is it safe or recommend to discharge at 2amps or should I discharge at a lower amperage?

You can discharge at a far higher rate than charge so the max 2 amps is fine. Your 6000 can probably take at least 30 amps.

Man, I should really read the question better..

I thought you were asking how fast to CHARGE a battery..

guver is correct, you can charge far faster than you can charge..

Just curious - Why do you want to discharge them? For long term storage?

I think "long term" storage when it comes to lipos is something like 3 months or longer =)

I say stay with the 3.8v per cell and 2a discharge rate that has already been recommended, just watch your charger and make sure that it doesn't get too hot while discharging (27watts power dissapation at 7.4v and 2A)
