It depends on the specific cells. Many good sub C cells could go 20-30 C. Ceap generic cells usually 10C. Radio batts maybe 1-2C. Old cheap generic radio batts may fall on thier face at c/2 or less.

In a perfect world you may be able to put 20-30C on a Nicd battery. If you take a very good 2A nicd and put a load of 40-60A on it, it will burn up in a matter of a couple seconds.

I thought the highest C a NiMh could output was about 6C. Isn't that one of the biggest advantages of going to Lipo the fact that they'll dump a lot more power than NiMh?
