Default LiPo vs. LiIon vs LiManganese

I've always used NiCds and have decided it's finally time to make the jump to Lithium batteries for my flight pack (receiver/servos). My biggest reservation has been the safety issues about lithium batteries.
Are these batteries as fire-prone as previously believed? or has technology improved them?
Claims seem to indicate Li-Manganese are the safest but I don't really want to be a guinea pig by being the first.

I've been considering running redundant packs. Are lithium batteries at the stage that they are fully reliable? I would just as soon not add the extra weight (and expense) if it's totally unnecessary.

I'll be charging my plane in my basement and will NOT be able to remove the batteries for charging. Also, at times it may be difficult to be present during the charging process. I'm considering the Thunder Power TP-610 charger. Is this way overkill and can I use a standard DuraLite charger instead?

Thanks for your help.

why do you want to switch. Nicads are the most reliable and least costly system out there. Unless you really need to save weight, I would stick with nicads.
