A123 is ya best bet l think.
Dont get all paraniod about LIPO buddy, there not as bad as its made out to be, l been using them for months with no issues, no fires, explosions, just balance every time you charge, couldnt be easier.

Been using Lipos for years without a problem. You just have to be careful and don't just leave your batteries on charge and walk away (or leave the house). Ideally, charge them in a place where there's nothing flammable near it

I hear ya on being cautious about the Lipo battery.
The reason why I am still on NiMh batteries.....
I do believe as long as you pay attention to it, is should be okay, but you never know.............and then again, I could drive my car down the street and get in a fatal wreck. I guess like a lot of things it is the roll of the dice.
I plan to do it one day, but my NiMh batteries will suffice for now.
Also for a nice charger that is cheaper than that GT one you linked....check into the AC6 Thunder charger (from hobbypartz) that does everything for 55 bucks and 10 dollars shipping on everything. I paid 65 bucks to my door. Hobbyking is a nice place, but shipping might get you on that.
Just an idea...

OK Nimh v LIPO
.
LIPO wins hands down. Period.
Lipo will not get as hot under same loads.
Lipo can duscharge faster and stay cooler.
Lipo have 30% more capacity, ie, longer run times.
Lipo will smash nimh for speed.SMASH.
Lipo can be re-charged / discharged from any voltage point. No memories.
Lipo can be stored longer without damage to the cell.
Really the only dis-advantage to LIPO is complacent users, people who rush things, dont take the care they should, and dont treat things with respect. Thats how fires start in charging. Usually the cell is already damaged if it catches fire, which is almost never, its never happened to me.
One rule, re-charge in a none flamable area. Then if it was to go up in flames you loose a battery and charger only. Common sence.
All this talk about LIPO fires etc is alot of scare mungoring. Its safer than nitro fuel in the long term.
LIPO absolutely are far superior to NI-CAD or Nimh for high discharge machines.Like RC anything....cars, planes, boats ,subs, choppers, tanks the lot !

And LIPOare cheap as Nimh or cheaper, why would go any other way !

I dont know about scare mongering, there are many documented cases of fires. One of our club members had a close call. To this day we havent figured out why it burst into flames. It happened in his garage after he got home from the field. 45 minutes later he just happened to be in the garage when it popped. He just used a screw driver to shove it on the floor of the garage. It was sitting on a wood work bench right next to the wall. Fires do happen. No argument about it advantages.

RE: Safe lipo batteries?? alternative to lipo?
Iam the furthest thing from an authority on the subject that exists, but Ihave heard quite a lot of stories of NiMh batteries going off as well. Ihave a stainless steel sink in my garage, and purchased some old ammo boxes, and I was going to sit the battery inside the ammo box with the lid sitting on loosely resting in the (unconnected) sink. Ionly use NiMh currently, which charges by connection to a car battery, but figured the same setup should be ok for Lipo should Ichoose to go that route...Ihope!
