Is this battery too puffed up?
|
Your picture doesn't show the detail needed to make a proper judgement , three views of the battery , length , width , and height , minus the hand , will allow a far better assessment to be made .
;) Now , with that said , I always follow the same golden rule as to whether food is spoiled or not "When in doubt , throw it out" . House fire , VS up puking all night , yea , the golden rule works , in other words ALWAYS err on the side of safety and your house and stomach will be just fine ...... |
Is this better?

 Um , No , not really .
Look , dude , I'm not trying to bust your aggies here , I'm really not , but do you know what an engineering "three view" is ? That's whats needed , MINUS THE HAND , to get a good enough view of your battery to make any kinds of informed opinion as to just how puffed it actually is . Personally , since I still can't see enough detail even in your latest picture , I'll again have to fall back to "The Golden Rule" ..... |

How common is it for them to blow up?
How often do they explode?

Is it "squishy" or firm? A new battery is "square" (ok rectangular :)) and firm. Once they start to get squishy, I tend to err on the side of caution, especially since prices for LiPo have come down so much.
With the price of a new 3S LiPo 2200 mAh pack that will last you hundreds of flights about the same as couple of six packs of beer that will last you 1-2 weekends, it seems a no brainer to me. |
That's ok
I erred on the side of caution and cut the leads off and put it in a bucket of salt water. Thanks for all the help guys.

Doesn't looked puffed to me from those pictures. Do the cells balance? I agree with others here though. If in doubt and it seems like you are, dispose of it properly and buy new. Peace of mind.

I’ve seen brand new batteries puff up while still in the package hanging on a hook in the store. Who knows why they puff, when, or if they can still be used. I have also seen puffed batteries return back to normal after using them. Very strange. I’m not so sure there are very many that last for 100s of cycles. |
