Wing spar pin or scissor pin
Hi all,
My first kit build was a Greatplanes PT-40. When contructing the wing, the instructions said to pin the main wing spar to the plans and then build the remainder of the wing around the spar. Everything worked out great and the plane is still flying.
I am in the process of building my next plane which is a Goldberg Tiger 60. Wing constructions says to pin the main spar using a scissor method which criss crosses the pins across the main spar.
What is the difference between pinning directly through the spar onto the plans, or using the scissor pin method? Is one better than the other? Could I pin directly through the spar again like I did with the PT-40?
Any advice is appreciated.
Have a great day,
Brad

RE: Wing spar pin or scissor pin
If the wood of the supplied spar is of hard type, the pin thru is harder to do and it may split the wood.
I prefer the scissor method over pin thru, everywhere and for any wood type; but I don't have a particular reason.
Go magnetic!!

Thanks for showing me my newest idea Mike!!!!!! Came just at the right time too, I'm building a wing this week.

RE: Wing spar pin or scissor pin
Rather than go through a wing spar of cross the pins, Ipush them into the board leaning away from each other and use a rubber-band between them for down pressure.
This also allows me to hold the upper spar down, align everything (Iuse House of Balse squares), and then use CA to glue all the ribs one right after the other in a single operation.

Gene, you're lucky. Usually I leave the hardware store will all the cool stuff I thought of using for planes and completely forget the stuff I went there for [:@]
Actually, that idea came to be because I had just hung a new flourescent light over the bench and had a few of those clips still sitting on the table when I started the new build (for which I had hung the light).
Voila!
