Great Planes Big Stick 40 for trainer?

The stick has a symetrical airfoil for the wings. A lot of the Bridi Trainers were designed with symetrical airfoils also and didn't balloon into the wind like the flat airfoils used on the typical trainer at the field today.

here is another option, it is basically a stick but is much more durable, http://spadflyer.com/ they are much cheaper too, a plane only costs 50 bucks.
it flies really well for a spad imo, they will also take a beating and still fly, just buy some nylon bolts because the gear breaks off
this way you get the best of both worlds, a stick and some room for error

Just got back from flying out in the wind with my 26cc Ultra Stick Lite. I haven't flown it for a while. Damn I love the way it flys! Stupid Pulse 125 with a Saito distracted me from my 1st love.
Next weekend is all Ultra Stick weekend.
Damn Pulse!! [:'(]
Don't get me wrong, I REALLY like my Pulse 125, its just that it tried to get me to leave my Big Stick for her......[:@]

RE: Great Planes Big Stick 40 for trainer?
G'day
Way back in the dim mists of time I used a Thunder Tiger ARC Stick to learn to land. I had moved from a high wing trainer to some gliders but could still not land normal models properly. I chose the Stick because it looked chunky and strong and also because of the shoulder wing. It turned out to be a great landing plane. It just need me to line it up with the strip, reduce the power and it would track straight onto the strip. Just needed some elevator control to make the landing smooth. It also flew well in windy conditions.
I still have two Great Planes Big Stick 40s. One has a Super Tigre 51 and flies really well and the other has a Jett SJ-46 which is insane but fun.
These days I use them as engine test beds and for when I want to get the aileron thumbs working properly.
Cheers

It's too bad that many are turned off by the way a Stik looks ( I was too ).
After reading so many "Everyone should have a Stik" posts here, I picked one up.
Am I glad I did!

i still sometimes get pangs of regret selling my Stik 60 with the OS95ax up front. Man, i should've held on to that thing. I was just getting tired of CONSTANTLY buying glow fuel. I hadn't considered how quickly 90 sized two strokes suck fuel like coca cola.

I was turned off by the looks of this plane for years but after seeing so many of them at our field, I desided to get one to put a set of floats on since they fly so well and now its my faverate plane to take to the field, its great in the wind or no wind at all...

I was having fun with my stik at the field yesterday, it was pretty windy with some good gust, but I was having fun flying her like a kit, just barely moving forward above me. ))

Yeah in a breeze the Stik can be either a Kite or a Hawk, scooting back and forth with little thrust from the engine.
I've had mine up for close to an hour non-stop, as the engine was just above idle most of the time.

RE: Great Planes Big Stick 40 for trainer?
I just found this thread on the original Ugly Stik and it indeed
was intended to be used as a trainer, and is refered to as being very easy to fly.

I agree!

At my field all the trainers wants you to buy a trainer and I did and crashed all three. All three were so boring I bought a .60 Stik and
resume training with aonther guy when everyone left. He told me to get rid of the trike gear and make it a tail dragger.
It has a OS 91 and in the afternoons it does get a bit windy and he only told me to throttle back with altitude and regain
my composure and confidence. In the beginning he told me to maintain altitude and don't fly too fast. That was 6yrs ago and i still have
not solo on a trainer. Now I have a 1.20, 2 GP .60 and 1 GP .40, all taildraggers with tons of power amoung other planes, but my preference
now is speed Q500 racers. Good Luck and Have Fun
