RE: how do you guys land?
oh wow. i guess that a larger plane would be good for your field then so that it will be easier to roll....and handle the wind a little better.

I have started to try grass landings because they are better on your plane if your wingtip scuffs the ground.
That's why wingtip guards were created.
Practically all of my planes have them in case a crosswind blows a wing down at landing.
Cheap insurance against asphalt rash.

RE: how do you guys land?
G'day electricrc68. Yes, larger planes always help on our field. As you can see, it is not exactly smooth. Even 40 size models get caught on the holes between the grass and sometimes tip over or ground loop.
Bigger is pretty well always better in the wind too. More weight means more inertia and so bigger heavier models are less likely to be tossed around by the turbulence.
Some blokes do fly quite small planes though and launch them from the ground. Small electrics generally don't weigh much and quickly bounce into the air.
We have fun anyway. And after all, that is what it is all about.

RE: how do you guys land?
You must fly small airplanes like the parkzone and e-flite. Almost all of those can be taken off by hand or on pavement, and most I have seen have landed on grass and pavement depending on the size.
When people talk about 40 size they are talking about the size of the plane. To help you understand, a 40 size would be a plane that would take a nitro engine that is from .40 to about .60 at the most. Here is an example of the nitro engines.

On nitro planes you can put electric motors on them too.

When people say they have a 100cc plane, that is usually a gas model that uses a regular gas engine. Th engine uses gas like you put in cars mixed with oil. Mixing the gas and oil like you would do for a weed-eater for edging grass.

This is why you are getting some crazy answers to your topic, because it is so broad.

All of my planes and helis are nitro, but I am looking to get 1 or 2 electrics because here in Atlanta, GA there are not a lot of big flying fields for my big nitro and fast nitro planes. I used to live in Nashville, TN and you could fly any size planes there including jets.
Check out peoples profile and you will see a lot of different type and size planes

I have them on mine, I was just giving him and example. Thanks though!!! All mine have them except my great planes revolver
That's why wingtip guards were created.
I even use them to bolster up contact points on trainers, such the tail.

RE: how do you guys land?
I'm a grass man all the way. My WWI birds don't like pavement and damages my skids after a while. Plus I can slew on a landing without chancing my plane doing a cartwheel on the ground. Grass is much more forgiving, it has less grab and can help on the landings because grass has more resistance. I've nosed over on grass before and walked away with no damage. On pavement that wasn't the case for me.

RE: how do you guys land?
I've landed on top of corn before.....needed a five gallon bucket to stand on to reach my plane, not a scratch or hole in the covering. Just keep the wings level and float them in, the elevator is not your friend at low speed. I have noticed my best landings have been dead sticks or while the TX timer is blaring, 1 shot at it, forces focus, almost always stops at my feet

And always remember Boys and Girls, if you have to bend down more than twice to pick it up it was a bad landing...
