How to secure batt and rx in plane?
Simple newbie question here:
I have a Hobbico Superstar 40(my first plane) that im about to finish up. My question is: How do i go about securing the battery and rx? I have the foam as well as double sided foam tape. The instructions say to wrap both in foam, wrap rubber bands around them and secure them with servo tape. What is servo tape? The rx is a Hitec Optima 7 and the battery is a Hitec 4.8V/1600mAh NiMH. I guess my concern is how to pull the battery pack in and out to charge it if its secured in foam which is then in turn secured by servo tape. I know im missing something really simple here so help me make the connection, lol. Thanks in advance!

Simple answer here: Velcro
Your Optima 7 should be secured with velcro and not wrapped with foam. This avoids heat problems. Using velcro (I prefer the industrial variety sold at Home Depot) I cut the hooks side to the size of the the Rx's bottom and this is then attached to the Rx with a bit of medium C.A. spread out evenly on the velcro. Do not just stick on the rx's with the sticky tape. Next the loops side is CA'd in the same manner to the airframe.
I also attach most batteries in this way.

Just noted your second question, You do not remove the rx to charge the battery. You use a Hitec standard charge type switch harness. One lead to the rx, one lead to the battery and one lead is the the charge lead. This is where you plug in your charger.
If you like, and I do like you can use this Dubro (my preferance) charge type Swich holder:

If you are concerned about vibration but don't want to wrap the rx, I've used foam safe ca to glue in a block of foam, then attach the Velcro to that.
For the battery, in addition to velcroing it down, I like to use Velcro straps. You don't want that thing to come loose in a high g manuver and unplug its self.

In a glow powered plane I would prefer to have a chunk of foam between the RX and the airframe. Leave the top open for cooling. A rubber band or two secures the RX from flopping around. Same for the Battery except cooling is not an issue.

For glow planes.. isn't an exposed receiver...(foam between receiver and frame only) susceptible to vibration by waves of sound as well. I fly 72 and 2.4 so I'm not sure about the technologies between the two if the boards are the same, surface mouint, etc. I use foama and velcro ties that wrap around a lite ply bar located from side to side of fuse.
