I remember getting a "switch" from MOM or if I had really screwed the pooch, the belt from the old man. Try that kind of discipline today and you end up in the calaboose!

I have been creepin on this thread since it was started, all I can say is fantastic! I share many of the same memorys as a lot of you do. I am only 51 years old but was raised poor also. had to post when I seen Fire fox 11's post. Thanks for getting me choked up, you have a great dad. Hope you get to fly together many more years!

I started the airplane trip at age 5 in 1956 with a plastic model Spitfire. I was so excited that I built on the way home with glue all over the back seat of the car. Went through several models and then my dad got me some balsa models also in there I remember getting both the slide together balsa gliders and the wind up stick models. I remember once getting a glider with fold up wings, you would launch it upward and the wings popped open and it would start gliding. I got a cox yellow piper cub, I found it before Christmas unwrapped in my parents closet and started the engine in the house before they got home.

Made balsa models of several types. A german albatross, P86 Saber. Tripacer. Don't think any of them made a flight of more than 2 seconds. Once made a scratch built powered glider with my .049 Cox. It had solid balsa wings. Actually had a few successful free flights. I got some control line planes and learned how to fly them. Wanted something more challenging so started into RC trainers. Flew one till the wing broke off doing a loop giving me a basket of parts. The servos still worked but they became nervous and would twitch on their own. I returned to control line flew wings I overpowered one of them and it would do 3 second laps. I had a Cox 15 that I thought might make a better straight line plane. Small thin wing, no rudder, knife edge stabilizer. At the time we used beer can stretchy plastic connectors to form hinges on the control surfaces. Pinned them in with toothpicks. It would run the 60 foot lines in two seconds, 130 mph. I mounted in a one oz tank to prevent from getting dizzy.

Have been trying to fly a plane I bought about 11 years ago. So far it has been a wash. Put up a thread about it today.

My first balsa model was a Sterling Ring Master in 1958. I think the kit was $3.95. I bought a McCoy red head .35 for $8.95.

He put a picture of me online, and has got me all teary eyed. Yes we built a lot of models and have had some fantastic times flying from sun up to sundown behind the house. Remember the day you soloe'd I took off behind you and took you out at 10,000 feet just like I promised. we landed side by side I was so happy................

I will say something I would have never admitted till now .....while teaching my son to fly I discovered he was not only a smoother flying pilot than i he is a better pilot. I gave him a hard time during his flight training and he took it and out performed me easily. SON, you do me PROUD. GOD bless you!

I will never forget that look on your face when that swordsman hit the ground you looked like you were about to die! your sister and I tried to explain it was alriight but...................

This site isn't big enough to contain the happy times flying with my son or all the other guys that flew with us. GOD is good!

Donny I love your shop! You got some nice projects going! I remember flying the LT-40 with my youngest sone when I got back into RC back in 04. He asked but dad what happens if I crash it? I said we build another one! He flys better than his old man. It came in handy having him fly with me. I had the engine quit and the airplane landed perfectly in the top canopy of a 100 foot pint tree. Guess who climbed up to get it? It wasn 't the old fat man! Only took 45 minutes to figure out it was in the tree. The eagle eyed Eagle Scout spotted it too!

Arup............No have not flown the bulldog. I built it for a friend that attended the same high school in New York ten years ahead of me. had to stop my mustang to do it. he passed away before I painted it but he did see it completed and willed it to me. Look on my blog on rcgroups.

I am surprised you could see anything in my junky shop.

my biggest problem is I have too many projects going. That mustang is about thirty years old, I've built at least a hundred planes since I first started it Heck it's on my work bench as we speak.
Planes in trees ....Been there, done that more than once.

AAARRRR don’t mention switch. I screwed up and caused my dad to get a huge poke from the coil on the car when he was cleaning the plug wires. His head hit the hood and he was hanging on to his elbow. Told me to get a switch he was going to smack my ass with it when he got feeling back in his arm. I’m no dummy I came back with the wimpiest switch I could find. He could hit me all day with it bet it wouldn’t hurt. Got the belt for being a smart ass instead. My mom always said I was a going concern as a kid and they would have probably had me on medication if I was a kid today. I admit I was always into something.

I hate to say it but sometimes I think a good swift kick in the pants might have done some good with the kids today. Take a simple thing like littering. Kids today just drop what ever on the ground expecting someone else to clean up after them. If I did that as a kid I'd get a swift kick in the butt and end up cleaning up for as far as my dad could see. As an adult I don't litter I like to think I leave a place cleaner than when I arrived and my two sons think the same way and act the same way. I have heard them rag on a friend who threw his wrapper on the ground.

Anyone have a neighborhood hero? A young guy with a garage who built all kinds of stuff and didn’t mind the kids hanging around. He could fix/build all kinds of stuff and would help you with your go cart or mini bike if you asked. He might ask you to hold something while he tack welded it in place. Our guy liked to build dune buggies out of old Volkswagens. Take the body off and cut 18 or 24 inches out of the center and weld them back up. He’d build some sort of roll cage that held the steering, seat belts and stuff together. Then we’d get a chance to go for a test ride before he sold them.

He gave me a pulse jet he had made in high school and showed me how to get it to run. Man I burned down the garage with that stupid thing. Got loose off the stand and dragged the whole thing into the garage fuel tank and all. I hid out for two days before I finally got caught and dragged home.

Remember when cars had antennas sticking out of their front fenders. We used to make up small kites from small sticks and something like cling wrap. Even the tails were clear. Then we would use some heavy duty thread (taken from moms sewing box) and test fly them. Once they flew well we would go to the local union hall. The guys used to drink in the basement. We would let the kite out until you couldn’t see it any more (it was clear cling wrap remember) then tie it off on somebody’s antenna in the parking lot with a ribbon on the string so they couldn’t miss it. Man was if funny when they came out half in the bag and found this string disappearing up into the sky tied to their antenna. Some times there were a half a dozen trying to figure it out.

OH great thread I've got tears in my eyes remembering all this stuff.

Whippings sound Terrible and many feel they damage our children............... well they are right. but whippings (in moderation) build character,provoke thought and has a way of making the humanization of rug rats stick. ask me how I know.
It is obvious to me that some have not read..........Spare the rod and spoil the child. and our society is the worst for it.

now I hope I don't start a s--- storm from the moderates. I know those that disciplined their siblings had few problems.

Agreed, we're all amenable to things of interest. Got experiences with an older kit, design or engine? Or learning curve on something? Flew any CL? Single or two channel stuff? Comment on new versus old? It's all about sharing.

I also go a fair share, the few welts just made me more aware I had screwed up and not to do it again, but in todays lib/world it would not do. I have to admit my mom could get to me and my brother faster by sitting us down and giving us a good verbal lashing with a few german expletive witch we did not under stand, and those gave us a clue we were in over our heads.

The great thing about this thread is it makes me laugh at my memories. if not for a house fire I would have a bunch of old pictures to share

One thing for sure that improved were the reliable engines. I remember a time when there was a lot of engine tinkering. When I was learning, the engines to have were O.S., as you could just set them, and they always ran. Not so with a lot of the cheaper new engines that hit the market. That dang Royal .40 comes to mind. I could not learn to fly until I was able to get an O.S.
