Donny, there is a group of electronic enthusiasts in UK who have already modified old radios possibly including the ones you have. For a reasonable fee (they are not out to make money) have converter boards with microcontroller electronics, to have servos mimic the old reed and old escapement systems. They have also successfully modified the early analogue proportional and pulse proportional systems, too. The link to their forum is:

http://singlechannellersreunited.co.uk/phpbb3/index.php

I was in contact with one of their gurus about a year ago, but can't recall who it was. He also has a website describing the various systems modified with detailed photos. Most of those mods involved getting the various signals converted to a modern pulse train that would be understood by a modern 2.4 GHz receiver. They can also recommend the best 2.4 GHz radio frequency (RF) transmitter module to use for successful conversion.

This is fun to see. I had no idea all of this stuff was going on. I just built what I knew and it worked for me.

I have been following this thread about antique modeling. Some of the things these guys did is really neat. The fascinating thing about these plans. It is not built out of balsa but hard wood seems in 1940 the French modelers could not get balsa. You will notice that they show the ribs hollowed out. Cool.

Joe Ott models were quite popular durring WWII and his kits consisted primarily of hardwood for stringers and cardboard for formers. I built several but all were so heavy they did not fly well at all.

I still have my 1980's AM radio, would be interesting to see if that can be converted to 2.4. Its a simple 4 channel, but some of my planes are only 4 channel.

That is a good question. I'd make friends with those in that British forum which link I gave earlier in this thread. They have quite a bit of expertise and could steer you the correct way.

My 4 1980s AM radios are all still mounted and working quite nicely. They can have 'em when they pry my cold, dead fingers off.

Here is the link to the guy in the UK building this stuff. http://www.mccrash-racing.co.uk/sc/sc24g.htm

He does everything from single channel to 12 channel reed simulation sets. all using modern reliable rc kit.

I don't remember who's kit it was but I remember the cardboard formers, the stringers were bamboo and I couldn't get the glue to hold them in place --very frustrating---- I was quite young!

I have used cardboard since as a proof of concept material in place of balsa--cheaper--- and CA glue works wonders now.

Has anyone seen the heathkit looking radio by JR currently on the market, It's rather retro with 2.4 inners-- somebidy's listening.

That conversion is very interesting but I couldn't remember the pulse sequence back in the day and really don't care to deal with it now.

What I need is a direct coversion from 72 to 2.4 for four cahnnels and up transmitters. The info from hobbyking is barely understandable I couldn't make any sense from the ad.

Joe

At least you saw it fly If mine got more than two inches from my hand before lawndarting I would have been thrilled.

Other than controline, nothing I built flew. I think I was in my mid twenties before I had a complete success ----- Orion, Mel Whitley at the controls. Eventual top gun winner.

Hay Donny I was 6 when I built my first comet kit coast me a dime with a small tube of glue it flew like tuuud, put it back together a few times then lit a match to it and thru it out of the barn loft window. Think I was about 10 before I got one to glide and fly with a little rubber power for 10 or 15 yards or so. So don't feel bad. but thinking back that far make my hear hurt

Gliders is something I was always curious about flying but Oklahoma isn't exactly the right terrain for finding thermals.

We did not have any barns in Brooklyn but our 13 story buildings made excellent launch pads for burning stick built planes.
