I would like any information about using a ST 90 on the Sig Four Star 120. Will the plane be under powered or will this be enough power to get it around the track? I am 61 yrs old and not interested in being the fastest "hot dog" in the club. I am hoping the ST will be powerful enough to to the standard manuevers with out having to hold "FULL" into everything.
I have a new ST 90 (6 yrs old) that I would like to put to use. After flying the 4* 60 for the past four years, it is time to move up. Also interested in any mods that will improve the performace and looks.

Why dont you put the 90 on the 60? I know you dont want a fast plane but you could always just stay at half throttle. As for using it on the 120 i think it would be ok, but im not positive.

Tnx's for the reply and information. I don't think I want the ST 90 on the 4star 60. Too much power. I did a simular thing on another plane and had one problem after another. The hinges on the elevator and ailorons were the first to go, then the rudder push rod broke away from servo, after that, I found a few other problems created by to much power. All of these problems were directly due to the over sized engine, not faulty construction!

After replacing the ST 90 with the original ST 60, all the problems terminated. The plane was the Sig Astro Hog.

Tnx's agn for the thoughts.

A ST 90 in a 4* 120 wouldn't be wise. The 120 is a heavy plane. The 90 would not be something I would try. My friend has one with a ST3000. That is a good combo or a larger 4 stroker.

Tnx's for the reply. Your information makes sense. Based on your practical experience I will give up my idea. Have to find another "general purpose" plane for the engine. Thank you very much. This was the information I was looking for.

Jp,
You might want to try that engine in something along the lines of the Great Planes Super Skybolt. A lot of guys are putting 1.20 four strokes in it, and I'm planning on a YS 91 four stroke in mine. Your ST 90 might be about the right power for it, and I doubt that it would be severely overpowered.

Tnx's for the reply. I had not thought abt the SkyBolt. With the ST 90 it looks like it would be tame enough for my flying pleasure. Also looks like it would be fun to build.

Tnx's agn

I don't think you'd be happy with a .90 anything on this plane. A 1.20 is ideal and a four-stroke would be awesome (my personal favorite is the Saito) I'm a big believer in a positive power-to-weight ratio (read that:bigger motor than I need) because you never know when the extra power might get you out of trouble (quartering crosswind gust on takeoff, aborted landing approach, etc.) Plus just tooling around the pattern at quarter throttle is a lot quieter than having to bore around at full power to maintain enough airspeed to fly, as well as easier on the engine. Save the .90 for something else or see if you can do a trade plus cash for something bigger.

As far as mods to the looks goes- one of the guys at our field cut the "cheeks" off his 4 Star 60 and fabricated a cowl, mounted the engine ( 2-stroke .70-something) sideways, with the muffler out the bottom and a 2-1/2 in aluminum spinner on front. It really cleans up the looks up front, and the same would be possible on the 1.20 size. Personally I would do a Saito 1.20 inverted and just cap the opening between the cheeks over the top of the crankcase, kind of round the corners a bit and put a big spinner on it. It's the simplest thing to do, and whatever anybody else says, I've got 2 planes with inverted 4-strokes, both Saito's, and another guy in the club who builds 1/4 scale WWI bipes inverts all his, too, and they all run without any problems.

I've had two 4* 120's. One had an OS 1.08 and the other an OS 1.20 four stroke. Actually the 1.08 had a little more power. Both flew the planes great! A 90 in my opinion would be marginal at best on the 120 size.
