Help with potential purchase
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the R/C world. I just recently bought a plane off of Ebay. It was a small electric park flyer that turned out to be not very good. I'm on a mission for a new, better, bigger plane.
My boss's son has a plane that he said he would sell me. It's an "Easy Fly 40", it has a nitro engine (I think maybe it's a .40), it comes with the radio and everything else needed to fly it. He's only flew it a few times. He wants to sell it to me for $200. So, my questions are: Is it worth the asking price? Will this be a good plane for me to fly for a few years? How much of a hassle is a nitro engine versus a 2-stroke gas???
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!
-Mike

RE: Help with potential purchase
A .40 size trainer with engine and radio and all the necessary support equipment (starter, etc.), could easily be $350+. Reliability of most 2-stroke .40 nitro engines is very good and will be more than adequate to get you started. Assuming everything's in good condition, it sounds like a good deal and should serve you well to get you completely hooked the way many rc pilots are. I'd also be more likely to recommend the deal since you know the seller, which makes the ebay shaft phenomenon less likely.
Don't forget that getting the plane is just the beginning. You will need an instructor to help teach you how to operate the plane and to help you learn how to fly it. Don't be tempted to fly it without someone helping you. That's the quickest way to put an end to your plans to fly the plane "a few years."
Good luck.

I don't know much about that particular plane or what engine or radio system comes with it but found another thread about it.

While it may not be the "BEST", I feel it may probably be a good deal for you. If you could find out a little more about the engine and radios I/WE could be more specific.
By:" everything else needed to fly it." does that mean a complete field kit with fuel and batteries or just the radios or what.
Other than this, I agree with waagbuck. You will certainly want to seek out a local club for help learning to fly ANY nitro powered plane. Your local hobby shop should be able to help there or check with
www.modelaircraft.org in the club locator section.

yes get an instructor and join the AMA. I never wanted to join the AMA, but it REALLY is nice to have that insurance and with AMA you can fly at a club. Flying at a club is LOADS of fun. Most of the time you talk more than you fly, but that's the best part, you never rush to fly.. just havin fun..

Hi All,
Thanks for your replies.
I'm going to be on vacation this coming week. However, I will be able to get ahold of the plane the week of the fourth and find out more info on the engine and remote control. I will keep you posted.
Thanks!

Nice looking trainer and decent size. IT should be good if the rest of the stuff is ok. You may want to see if somebody can cycle the batterys for you before you just charge them up and head for the field, depending on when they wer used or tested last.[8D]

That does sound like a good deal to me. And if you end up having problems with the nitro engine, it's doesn't cost that much to buy a .40 glow engine. You would still end up ahead.
