Hey Ken was wondering if you would consider building another Hog Bipe and do the build like you are doing this one. I would like to build a Hog Bipe, but i have a couple of kits in front of it first. LT-40 (currently building) and a Goldberg Super Chip. It would be awesome to have a thread to reference a Bipe build with the detail like this one. I know this is a big request given how much you dislike biplanes.

While you wait for Ken's answer, you may want to look at this thread.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_25..._1/key_/tm.htm

It is pretty good and I've seen Ken reference it before.

Flyboy,
Oh yeah, you really have to twist my arm to get me anywhere near a biplane!!!!

I don't know, it might be possible. Only problem is that I don't need another Sig Pig in my fleet. Let me rephrase that. I could always use another one there, I just can't justify it. I wouldn't have a radio or motor for it. But who knows, we'll see what happens.

Thanks you guys for all your input on servos. I will most definitely be replacing the battery, was planning on that. Just wanting to know if there were any brands of servos I should really stay away from. I think i will go ahead and get the Futuba servos.

RCKen, I look forward to you catching up to me. I will be taking a break this weekend as I am going camping with some friends.

Only one last thing to do for the left wing panel to be finished (for the moment). As I said in my last post, I'm going to hold off setting the W1 rib until I have both wing panels finished and ready to be joined. I glued on the wing tip panel earlier, and now I'm going to finish that part up. I'm including some extra pictures for Tigerdude to see what the wing tip plate looks like. When we finish up this step there will be some semi-ugly holes left in the wing tip. Some my be tempted to fill those holes now while we are here, but I prefer to wait on doing any filling. As you are still building just isn't the time to fill. You may wind up with more to fill later on, you may find out that you don't need to fill after all, or you may damage what you filled as you work later on. In my opinion it's just easier to fill later on when we are working on the finish of the plane. But for now, let's finish up the left wing panel by taking care of the wing tip plate.

Remove the the tape that was holding the wing tip plate in place while the glue was drying. It should look pretty much like picture #1, with the leading edge, trailing edge, and the spars extending past the end of the wing tip plate. The next step is to cut off the extra. Some might thing that it would be better to cut of as close to the wing tip plate as possible. While this might seem easier, it usually will result in extra work. More often than not you will end up cutting too much away, or gouging wood out of the wing tip plate. When you cut these off just make a rough cut that is “closeâ€. Leave extra material. This is just the same principle as I said in an earlier post, it's better to do a little bit at a time because you can always cut a second time, but it's a pain to try and add material back. Pictures #2 & #3 show cutting these sticks off, leaving extra material there. As you can see in pictures #4, #5, and #6 you can see how it was a “rough†cut with extra material left. Use a sanding block to smooth down the rough cuts. Don't worry about getting a “covering ready†finish when you sand, we are just interested in getting it close. We'll worry about getting is smooth when we sand the entire plane in preparation for covering. In pictures #7 & #8 I used 80 grit paper on a small sanding block to “rough it inâ€. In picture #9 we can see how the top main spar sticks out past the edge of the wing tip, we'll want to sand that down too. Use your sanding block to rough shape it to the same shape as the wing tip. Pictures #10 and #11 show how they looked after being rough shaped. Picture #12 shows the final wing tip plate.

And there you have. We are finished with the left wing panel roughly finished. It wasn't has hard as you thought it would be was it? I'll let you in on a little secret, we just finished half of the hardest part of building an airplane. Yep, that's right. When we finish the right wing panel we will be done with the hard part. And see how easy it was to get here? That's why I am doing this build thread, to some people just how easy it is to actually build a plane.

Pictures
1. Rough ends of spars, leading edge, and trailing edge.
2. Cutting off excess rear spar.
3. Cutting off excess leading edge
4. Rough cut ends
5. Rough cut leading edge
6. Rough cut spars
7. Sanding down rough cuts
8. Sanding down rough cuts
9. Main spar extending past wing tip
10. Sanding main spar to shape of wing tip.
11. Trailing edge sanded to shape.
12. Wing tip finished.

Until next time

Default RE: Pay It Forward Build Thread!! Sig LT-40 build

Ok, with the left wing panel done the instructions say to go back and build the right wing panel in exactly the same way. Since I've posted details doing the left wing panel I'm not planning on posting anything for doing the right wing panel. What I am going to do is build the right wing panel and then my next construction post will be the next step after building the right wing panel, which will be actually joining the 2 wing halves. Hopefully it won't take too long to build the right wing panel.

I don't know about those of you out there reading this thread, but when I am following a construction thread I like to see as many pictures of the project. I've been putting in as many pictures as I can for each step, but like I said before, I'm limited to posting 12 pictures with each step. Trust me, I have a lot more pictures taken than just the ones that I've posted. Since I won't be posting for a little bit, I'm going to upload all the extra pics that I've got laying around for you all to look at. I'm not going to label them or put commentary on them, but if you have any questions about any particular picture please don't hesitate to PM me about it. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Later

Ken

Looking good as usual Ken, I'm starting to get excited for SeeBee and his daughters! I can't wait to see the finished plane. I hope it gets done before I have to go back to work, while I have the time to watch your progress on a daily basis. I see your watching as well SeeBee, starting to look like an airplane isn't it? This is the best build thread ever Ken. Give yourself a pat on the back!

I don't know, it might be possible. Only problem is that I don't need another Sig Pig in my fleet. Let me rephrase that. I could always use another one there, I just can't justify it. I wouldn't have a radio or motor for it. But who knows, we'll see what happens.

Ken
Hey Ken, I'll bet I could get you to justify getting the WildHare Ultimate

Oh yea folks, you don't have to twist his arm much when it comes to bipes. All I have to do is mention my WH Ultimate and he finds a way to try to talk me out of it. The latest was me saying he could have it when he could pry my dead cold fingers from it and he asked can he do it while my fingers were still warm.

Ken:

Looking great man! I'm thinking sig should include your pics/illustrations and instructions from this thread with all their LT-40 kits
As well as your build thread for the 4*
[sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif] Ditto on that feeling. Mountaineer did a fantastic job on his 4*.

Katrina +Rita+ Wilma + New Baby = No flying

My company does a lot of work with electric utility's...and I've been spending a lot of time down south working storms...so not much flying.

I hope things slow down a bit and I can get some flying time in before the snow starts to fly.

MountaineerFan: Sorry to here that, but that is what I suspected. I was hoping to hear that you had snuck in a little time on that beautiful 4*60 you worked so hard on. Well, if it wasn't for work we couldn't afford this hobby. I know how it goes. I was in construction back in the early 90's when hurricane Andrew devastated Miami. I was snowed under with work for a year before I was so burnt out I had to quit.

Good luck to ya,
Patrick

Hehehehe, Bruce, musta been stuck in my head from previous comments . I hardly think it is time to start worrying about snow when we can't even get through with hurricane season [&o].
