There is only one CORRECT position. It should be shown on the plans or in the instructions or both. Moving the engine thrustline randomly up or down is not a good thing to do. It will change the way it flies at least slightly.
Is there a detail drawing on the plans for the firewall and if so give us a close-up of it or the book instructions. Are there any marks (drawn or stamped) on the firewall that may be alignment marks?

If his kit is the same as mine was, and I see no reason for it not to be, there are very specific and detailed instructions on engine mounting.

I ordered the muffler extension piece so that I could move my engine lower down so that it is more centered in the firewall can somebody tell me how to know where to postion the engine in the firewall because I am a newbie I do not know how to do it

Matt

This would be a mistake lowering the thrust line substancially will cause aggravated pitching up when power is applied, something that the downthrust angle is intended to minimise. There should be no need for a muffler header extension when the engine is mounted upright and at the thrustline indicated on the plans represented by that line drawn throught the crankshaft. Lowering this line lower below the vertical CG will always result in excessive pitch changes with power changes. This is more pronounced on high wing aircraft.

My internet connection at home failed so I was only able to upload one picture, so here it is.
Note the notch carved from the cheek for the needle valve (on the opposite side room was carved out for the muffler)

You need to mount the engine in the location and in the manner described in the plans/instructions. In doing so, it may be necessary to remove a little of the "cheek" pieces for needle valve and muffler clearances.
On pg 29 of the attached manual
http://www.osengines.com/manuals/40-46-65la-manual.pdf
is an exhaust extension IF you need it to clear the side of your fuselage but I doubt that you will.
Make sure you leave at least 1/8 inch clearance around the needle and muffler for movement.

The engine in the pic is a TT Pro .46 with stock muffler. I did, as mentioned, carve out the cheeks to clear the muffler and needle valve.
I am willing to bet yor OS. motor will fit without the extension.

Does anyone have the Kadet Senior instruction manual scanned into a digital format? Sig wants 10 bucks to send me a new one. I started building this plane about 13 years ago and have somehow misplaced the instruction manual. If someone could e-mail them to me at [email protected], it would be greatly appreciated.
