RE: Four-Star 120 build getting started.
man i havent had the time to get on the bandwagon and get working again. Ive decide on a BCMA 33 or 45 cc(same size, only 2 ounces more for the 45) with the electronic ignition package. Motor should weigh in at 2.2 pounds, but will definetly require a cowl(wich i was going to use anyway).
Im still not shure on servos, i need to fix a dent i put in the wing, get the tail feathers built, and make servo mounts etc. thats as far as ill be able to go until i can afford a motor. Covering is going to be fun.....(note SARCASM!!!!!)

I am not too sure if the four * .60 is just a small version of the 120, but I am buying the kit soon.....as soon as finances and wife allow. I hope to have in up before July. But when I get the kit and start the building, I will keep my log, so I can get some critiques. Looking good though....

RE: Four-Star 120 build getting started.
From the depths I resurrect my post I guess.
This plane got put on a shelf abut the time I stopped posting progress reports because of...well mom didn't like my GPA getting awfully close to starting with a "1" instead of a "3".
I've also been dealing with a bout of very serious OCD related issue which left me pretty much a hermit in my own home unable to drive...... and I thank the good lord everyday I got smart and finally went to a doc. and got help.
Now I'm back flying(or will be if I can quit hitting playground equipment and the ground with my ep kadet LOL).
I also discovered to my chagrin that my puppies had EATEN the left wing panel of my poor four star(mom thought I had sliced and appendage off when I started yelling after I found that one....), so, a new wing kit is going on order from sig sometime this week I think.
I'm also still trying to figure out what motor to run. BCMA doesn't even sell the motor I had chosen for it originally, so I need some input(the jett is out of the question now....) on whether there 26cc EFI or 44cc EFI would be more appropriate.
I should have the tail finished soon(I managed to screw up the H. stab originally, I'm going to go buy some more wood and finish it and the V. stab tomorrow).
BTW, ya'll are going to love my doctor's advice on helping with insomnia and OCD...... "go find the biggest, most complicated airplane kit(this was after I explained I flew RC stuff) you can, and build it...."!

RE: Four-Star 120 build getting started.
ok here are some new pictures, though I apologize for there horrendous quality, the camera I have access to at the moment sucks(my XT doesn't have a lens right now, I was borrowing one and had to return it....)
(sorry for the black spots, there was an old....item of clothing.....laying on the table I had been using as a rag I didn't feel the whole world needed to see....)
Covering is solartex dark blue fabric(I love it), servos will be CS-70's. I'm also reconsidering my motor choice and might be going with a saito 180 instead of the gasser for now....
heres some of the trainer I recovered in an effort to get back flying as well.

Deicded to lay some paint down on the op......whats the easiest way to remove it without destroying the covering, or is it better to take some brush on paint and edge it?

I'm building one with a ryobi 31 cc weedwacker engine. I really want the side cheeks but i think it's gonna complicate the build. I would have to move the firewall back about two inches. Any thoughts on this?

So here's a brilliant question...... if I've messed up the top trailing edge sheeting, can I use two separate pieces as long as the larger one is actually glued onto the edge of the TE piece,.
Basically my strait edge slipped while cutting it, and I need to fill in about 1/4 or more on the back side.....

Hi Matt I had A 33 hommy on my 4 * 120 and I made side cheaks out of 1/16 plywood that I put on with screw and put A 3\8 by 3\8 brace across the top and bottom just behind the flywheel. It looked good and didn't add hardle any weight too the nose.Hope this helps.

Flyboy- something I didn't mention earlier, have you looked into a purpose built motor like a BCMA? they have a nice flush mount kit for theres that should be fine with the stock cheeks, and there 26cc with Electronic ignition module is only about 275$......

I'm ready to bang my head against the wall......The two root ribs have a very small gap at the top............
I don't know whats gone wrong, I checked and re-checked dihedral angles and now one appears to be over angled at the top of the rib, but not the bottom. I don't think the gap is big enough to cause the wing to be structurally unsound, especially if I add a wider and heavier piece of fiberglass to the top section instead of the supplied 2 inch strip...

RE: Four-Star 120 build getting started.
Makes me feel better eh!
What do yall think of the paint scheme? I'm thinking about doing a blue/white scallop pattern on top of the wing.
I also took the wing to my LHS and showed it to the owner. He says(and I trust this man, he's had that shop just in that store for 65 years or so......) that the gap is not a big deal, and that I should fill it with a piece of 1/16th inch balsa and stop worrying . He also said if I'm still concerned about it to go ahead and use the heavier cloth.....
I also wanted opinions on control linkage setup. He is recomending not using any kind of Z-bend on these 4-40 rods, but rather screw style connectors(ie. the rod passes through a brass block and a screw is tightend to retain the rod in it.)
Just curious what y'all think.

The paint scheme looks fine and the wing gap is inconsequential. More cosmetic than anything else. If you try to bend 4-40 rods, in tight bends especially, they'll snap. Brass block? Got a link? Regular solder or threaded clevis's with jam nots are fine. Brass block? May be a terminology thing.

sorry it was a bad description...
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXK098&P=0]These= gp screw lock connectors...[/link]
The wing mounting is now finished......just need to touch the epoxy on the LE up, build servo mounts, and glass the center joint, then I can start to cover
