Default Sig 4* 40 with OS .46FX prop question

The 4* is my second plane. I have been on my trainer for a while now and want to move on to a second plane. A lot of people recommend the 4*.

What prop do you recommend me to use? I need something thats going to get me a nice stall speed to make landings a bit easier. Someone had recommended I use a 11X6. Should I maybe move down to a .40LA or something to that matter?

Default 4 Star

I think a 11x6 is a good choice for the plane.I have used 11.5x6 bolly clubman alot and 11x7 APC on my 46.In the 4 Star I think a 11.5X6 Bolly would work well. And as for putting in a 40LA,?Just remember you have a throttle and you should be fine with the 46FX.

Default 4* stuff

To answer your question: with that engine/plane combo I would go with an 11-6 prop. Reason: you don't need much thrust for that plane. The plane is very light and has low drag. It will keep cruising along without losing altitude if the engine is anything above idle speed. Thats why the plane has to be allowed to slow down from a long ways out to a slow walking speed or you will overshoot the runway. This also creates a problem if it gets windy or there is a crosswind. Speed wise the plane can be very fast even with that prop with a 46 engine. The plane is also very rersponsive, almost at the point of being touchy. With the speed difference between the 4* and your trainer and the quick response time will probably scare you for the first couple of minutes. Therefore I would strongly suggest that at least the first flight be with an experienced pilot on a buddy box. The good news is, because the plane will fly really sloww, when you get into trouble just throttle way down and let things slow down for a while. Then throttle up a bit and get used to it. The 4* is ok, but the Midstar is a better all around flying plane. It has a more positive descent rate so it will actually be easier to land than your trainer. It is also more aerobatic and will fly as fast as the 4*. Either one is good for the "WOW" factor when you see the difference between your trainer and one of these. HAve fun, Fast!

Default Yea, what he said

Fastsky is right on with his reply.

I had a 4* .40 with a Tower Pro .46 and an 11x6 APC prop. Mine flew great! Fast or slow no problem. Lots of vertical. When you set it up just follow the instructions, they're right on the money for the max/min control throws and CG. Start out with min. throws (helps if you have dual rate). It's a good idea to get an instructor and a little buddy box time until you get used to a plane that goes right where you point it.

With a little practice you'll find it to be a great plane. I lost mine do to dumb thumbs . It was my favorite plane. I'm replacing it with the .60 size version.

Default Sig 4* 40 with OS .46FX prop question

I am not into speed at all but love vertical flight.
All the props suggested for the fx is a good choice but give a 12.25/3.75 APC a try if you can without the prop hitting the ground.
The bigger prop acts like a brake and the low pitch gives instant thrust and great vertical.
You are going to love your 4*!!

I noticed on Mike Bells post a photograph of a beaver with a Bazooka.

That is a classified picture of the latest secret weapon in the Canadian Armed Forces!!

Default Sig 4* 40 with OS .46FX prop question

I have used both a 11x5 and a 11x6 prop on this plane using the same engine combo. The 11x5 was my favorite because it gets into the .46 fx sweet spot in the rpm band. This engine really loves this size prop. Also the lower pitch makes it easier to slow this plane for landing. You will love this plane.

I agree with sprot10,

I have the same plane & engine combo and 11x5 is better than 11x6 in my opinion, I will get 11.5x4 and try it. I used APC.

You can hover with 11x5

11-5 will fly it great and will also help with the speed control when it's time for landing.

I put several differernt sizes on this weekend. I think I am the happiest with the 10 x6. I was completely amazed at the difference a prop can make! Wow, that thing was coming off the ground like a rocket! It was a blast!

Thanks Guys,

Wings
