Default How much do you spend on model airplanes?

Just out of curiousity, how much money do you guys spend on this hobby per year? What do you mostly spend it on? How do you feel about devoting this much to a hobby?

* Excluding AMA membership and club fees.

If the answer is personal, just feel free not to answer.

Let's just say that you don't have a category up there for me. I'm higher than your highest figure there.

Hi,

Here lies madness and possible divorce. I once thought of adding up what I have spent and what I planned to spend and quickly moved on to something less dangerous.

Cheers,

Colin

Eat? My initial plans were to probably spend $200 a year. In the last year I've probably spent closier to $400.00, and I just counting the big purchases: new super tigre 40, Bob Smith T2-40 (ebay), Tower Kaos ARF (ebay), Tower Kaos kit, Bridi Planes Utter choas 40, Global Birdie (ebay), Jemco AT-6 (ebay - sold on RCU - bought another cheaper), Kraftkit 4 Seasons 40 (ebay), Tower Trainer 40 ARF (Tower - last year), ....

It's not additive ... hey look at that kit"

I have been flying regularely since January this year and I am over $2000 already. I equate R/C aeromodeling to haroin addiction. I want every plane I see and I compulsively buy whenever I think I find a good deal... oh did I mention I have spent this much and a lot of it is used? I have a problem... I know this... I have a support group... they meet at the airfeild on weekends... It's not helping... but it sure is fun!

I sure hope my wife doesn't find this post or I'll really be in the dog house. But This year on average I'm spending 1500.00-2000.00 a MONTH and still have 2 more months to go...lol

This Hobby exceeds my budget, but I love it anyway. I do admit prices have come down over the years. Even though my wife is very supportive, she still thinks this hobby is way too expensive than it needs to be.

Heck, not even close to your highest figure. An average engine for me starts at $800.00 and goes up from there. My newest plane just cost me $2700.00 and that is just the airframe, then I'll need a minimum of 13 servos at roughly $100.00 a piece, an engine that is around $1200.00, smoke system, etc...

http://www.composite-arf.com/ar/Product?443000

But here are my 3 favorites. The first one is an Aeroworks Yak. Total invested is roughly $2200.00, then my Ulitmate for around $1300.00 and finally my Cap232 at around $1200.00

I'm still getting together a 33% Wildhare Edge 540 that will be close to $2300.00 when finished.

Now you may ask how I can afford all of this. I'm lucky, I'm single, have a great job that pays and my company is very supportive of my habit (most of the upper management are full scale pilots) plus my current G/F loves my toys, plus she make a very good living as well so we both have our "play money". I'm working on getting her son and daughter involved. He's not too interested but she is.

Unsubscribe from this post. Don't leave a trail.

What's $400.00 for a yearly budget, when it costs you $40.00~$50.00 a week to fill up the gas tank in your car. There's an addiction. Or $40.00 a month for this internet connection (there's something which should be cheaper).

With 41% of your poll (as of this post) spending over $2000 a year, you should have had brackets $2000-$3000. $3000-$5000, $5000-$10000, and over $10000.

TypeRC is spending $2000 a month.

I bet a few other really serious Guys would too. Thats not including the serious jet Guys. Ive seen jet engines in a model shop worth $7000USD. They may be cheaper than that is the US, but OUCH!

I plan to get quite a few models, Helis and Planes (and when my little son is old enough-cars and racing buggies).
But im trying to stay in the .60 class or below. at the moment its .30 helis and .46 planes.

That really keeps the price down for models, engines and spares.

The theory is good, dont know how long I can stick with it though.

Wish Me Luck!!

Quite honestly. I prefer not to think about it.

Ken
Uh Ken, the "over $2000" category would cover any amount up to well over $20 million per year and then some. Do you exceed that?

Comeon Mike admit it. You bought a whole new house to be able to work on your planes in sperate areas, one area for review planes another for kits and another to hide all the ones you bought from the wife....

Not yet, they haven't been delivered yet. All we have now are B-727, A-300, A-310, DC-10, MD-10 and MD-11's. The B-757's, B-777's and A-380's are still on order though.

I'm gold as long as you high rollers keep a large bar on "Over $2,000/year". I may cut the poll out and pin it on our 'fridge. I'm making a list for my next 1/4 scale build this winter and that will take half the budget right there, but one of those lasts a long, long time (knock balsa).

That's a good point Charlie,

those of you that have wives that think you spend too much can use this poll and the comments to "explain" to them that you are not as addicted as some of us are and then do some research of the cost of a good jet model starting with a $1500 jet engine (and that's a cheap one)
