Get a free buddy box for training on.
I was over on the AMA's website researching club locations for another RCU member here in the Beginner's forum and I came across an interesting piece of information. Right now the AMA is running a promotion where you can receive a free Airtronics or JR buddy box when you sign up with the AMA. You'll have to use their "refer a friend" program to get the buddy box. You can find all the details for this offer on their website here: [link]http://www.modelaircraft.org/promos/1/[/link] .
I have had students in the past either rent a buddy box from the LHS, or buy one outright, when they were training with me, so I thought this is a pretty good deal. Hopefully it will help out some of the people here on RCU that are just getting started.
Hope this helps

Unfortunately it’s only for adult members.
Per the AMA website the following criteria must be met:
1. You must join as a new adult member to participate.
2. Must be over 19 years of age.
3. Only one offer per customer.
4. Must specify brand of buddy box, JR or Airtronics.
5. AMA reserves the right to modify or withdraw this offer at any time.
Guess that leaves out the younger members who are the real future of this hobby.

As an aspiring instructor I need to get a JR buddy box and cable as I have all Futaba gear so I am only able to help Futaba geared pilots at this time. Time to find a lacky... I could sign up the wife... but that would be a waste of $58. How much is it to just buy the buddy box?

would signing up with the shorter membership they have count? I have a friend who I am going to get signed up and this could work out very well for us, but i think he was planning on just doing the trail memebership first and going from there.

They now have a JR / Futaba "trainer link" for $11.99 that might fit your needs

Stang,
Horizon sells an adaptor to be able to use a Futaba transmitter as a Buddy box with a Jr system. I say transmitter, as it must have a battery.
We had to cut off 1/8 inch of the rubber from the end , which goes into the Futaba box, or it would not go in far enough.
Works fine.
Have used it on 2 Alha RTF's and 2 PTS Mustangs.

This sounds like it might work out well for me! I'm just getting back into R/C after a while off and going power for the first time. The only problem is that I have a Hitec Laser 4 system - would either of these buddy boxes work for me? Thanks!

Hitec is directly Futaba compatable. You will need a Futaba to Futaba trainer cord and a Futaba buddy box or another Futaba radio to act as the buddy box. In the case of Futaba/Hitec you don't need a battery pack in the trainer box and if you are using another Futaba transmitter as the buddy box, leave it turned off. [8D]

Thanks for the info . I'm planning on heading down to the local flying field soon to chat with the guys there and see what's up. Who knows - they might have one I can use! I'll probably take the AMA up on their offer and donate the free box to the club.

Would the "JR to Futaba" adapter from horizon work for JR to Hitec? I have one JR radio, and one hitec radio. Also if you do JR to JR, you need to have a battery in both transmiters. With JR to Futaba(or hitec) would you need to have a battery in the "buddy box radio"?

RE: Get a free buddy box for training on.
You can consider the JR to Hitec to be the same as JR to Futaba. It will work the same. In the case of "any" JR radio to buddy box you will need a battery pack in the buddy box because the buddy box cord doesn't have the extra wires needed to supply power from the radio to the buddy box. Futaba and Airtronics buddy box cords have the extra wires and also the extra pins on the radios/buddy boxes for the cord ends. [8D]

RE: Get a free buddy box for training on.
I want to take advantage of the free buddy box. I have a Tower Hobbies radio which everyone says is made by Futaba. What buddy box should I request.
Went out to the field this morning to fly and the guy that normally helps me out was helping someone else. [] No other buddy boxes. This offer would have helped me out.
Thanks
