Default Large Gas Trainer Suggestions Please.

Hello -

I've been flying for a few years and have moved from 60 size glow engine airplanes to larger gas engine airplanes. I much prefer the gasoline to the glow because of ease of use and reliability. I have a friend who is wanting to learn to fly and I have suggested that he get a larger gasoline airplane instead of the standard glow 40 or 60 size trainer. What model would work well for this purpose? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

First off Zenoah makes the G20 gas engine that will fit most 60 size airplanes, that said there is also the 12' Wingspan Telemaster.

If you want a kit, the Bruce Tharpe Super Flyin King could be worth looking at
http://www.btemodels.com/sfk.html
It has 11 foot wing span (3 piece wing) and is about 8 feet long.
It should weigh around 36 pounds and needs a 60-80 cc gas engine.
It is not advertised as a trainer but it looks like it could be used as one.
Most beginners are not going to spend the money a plane like this costs.

Yeah, better to let the newbie pick up a .40 or .60 trainer, then move up if the interest is indeed there.

Most of the smaller trainers fly soooo slowly anyway that a larger size is really not required.

At worst start them off with a .60 high winged plane, and they should have no problem keep up with that.

I have to revisit this statement.
I own nitro 2 cycle, 4 cycle and 2 stroke gasoline as do many of the members at our club.
I can say from experience that gasoline engines are no more reliable than any nitro engine. Or better yet I just don't have any reliability problems with any engine I fly.
A properly tuned and maintained engine of any kind will be reliable and last many years.
As for ease of use the ONLY difference is the need to wipe off residue with glow engines and with proper routing of the exaust or extension this can be kept to a minimum.
