Default Does 72 MHz channel matter?

I have not purchased my first radio system and would like some advice.

Channels range from 11-60. Are there any reasons to prefer one over another, or to go high rather than low? Down at the flying field I notice that the biggest concentration seems to be in the 30-50 range. Is that by accident or is there a reason for this.

What about channel synthesizers? Are they good?

Thanks for any insights you can provide.

Channel synthesizers are great, especially if your radio can be programmed to run either positive or negative shift as then you can use nearly any brand of FM receiver. The Hitec Prism is a good example of this when you get it with the Spectra Module.

I'll try this again got knock off by my server. The 30-50 channels are the first ones we had in the 72MHz band the lower numbers came latter. Unless there is a known frequency problem in your area I would purchase one of the least used channels.

Synthesizers are very good now but I would not buy one as your first radio. I have four transmitters any ten receivers all transmitter are different frequencies. If you have only one transmitter and several receivers you run the chance of running the battery down at the field if you have several planes with you. Separate transmitters mean that the batteries are equally discharged and you will not have to go home until all are low.

As stated, check with the club and ask about any known frequency issues. If not, pick one that the least amount of people are on.

One guy in our club recently purchased a new radio. His method for picking the channel? He went and looked at the frequency pins and picked the channel with the cleanest, least abused pin. He figured that meant the pin was least used, and he'd have fewer conflicts at the field. Can't really fault that approach

Rather than buy multiple costly transmitters why not buy a field charger?

As far as choosing a frequency, pay attention to which are used the least at your field(s) and buy one of those.

What Den!tjb said. I found out how many members were on any given frequency (and which ones were complaining of "hits" at the club) and selected one with the least popularity.
