Default Newbie Airplane Order/Build/BreakIn/Maiden/SoloVideo/Deadsticks!!

Hello. Below is what I've ordered and received to start out along with my progress at assembly, maiden flight, learning experiences and solo flight. Appreciate any comments.

Before you buy anything, get suggestions from your local club. You may find they have/sell items. The one I used to belong to has swap meets and they get donations from vendors that they auction off or have drawings. For example, they would probably have the training cord and buddy box that you would only need for training so why buy them?

I bought my NexStar before I joined a club and was lucky that the channel was not a very commonly used one. We had a couple that you would have to wait to fly if you had them. I know that is not an issue with 2.4GHz radios, but my point is to ask them first.

I've been given a glow plug starter, servos and various arms, and I was even given a radio that worked. It had a broken switch but was otherwise perfect. It could save you a LOT of money.

Also check out [link=http://gettingairborne.com]GettingAirborne.com - A Beginner's Guide To Flying Radio Control Airplanes[/link]. That site was created by Mike Buzzeo and Ken Isaac (RCKen and MinnFlyer here on RCU) and you will find valuable information there.

Good luck!

I would add the following:

4 glow plugs ( I like fox std. long w/ idle bar)
10x6, 11x6, and 12x4 props for your 46AX
12v field charger
monocote iron and some film for repairs
epoxy and ca glues
metal clevis to replace the plastic ones that come with the kit.

Buy your fuel locally, otherwise you will be charged a hazardous shipping charge.

Your list looks pretty complete to me, if you join a club you might not need the buddy box and cord, but check first since the 7C will only work with certain Futaba radios.

What do you mean by glow plugs 'long/w idle bar' Can you send me a link to one?
Also, any link to a 'metal clevis' to replace the plastic ones that come with the kit would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Well I can certainly apreciate your enthusiasm. You have a pretty comprehensive shopping list. I noticed on it you put "metal clevises" on it. While metal clevises are nice they are far from nessisary for an LT-40. If your sure that's what "you need" then Dubro .256 clevises are what will work for that plane. Have you been to the local club and spoken to an instructor yet? A lot of times a local club can help you get started for a lot less money. In many cases they will let you test the waters depth before you dive in head first.

Why do you want to replace the nylon ones with metal? For this size model nylon works.. unless im missing somthing

Thanks for the reply.

I don't think I need the metal clevises - someone suggested them so I added them to my list - I've taken them back off as I don't think I need them.

Yes, I've been to the local club, and in fact joined it and got alot of great advice from the guys I met. I've been flying on training nights weekly and alot on the sim. I'm sure I could get some used stuff for little or nothing from some of the club members but I just want to start out fresh with everything.

I see from your profile you have alot of really nice (and big) planes. Very cool. So is the Mustang on your profile page. I had one back in the seventies just like it minus the white stripes!

Here is a link to the glow plugs http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXG909&P=ML

These are what my instructor (30 yrs. experience) uses and recommends, says they idle much better than others.

As far as the metal clevis, dubro 2-56 will work, and they are cheap insurance. Again, I changed to these on suggestions from my instructor. He said he has seen a lot of problems with the plastic ones???

Thanks, I've updated my post with the new glo-plug you suggested.

How many clevis's will I need for the LT-40, do you know?

Shouldn't need more then 1 per servo. Buy a 10 or 20 pack and you will have spares

Looks like a pretty complete list but there's always something you end up needing. Lets see.
I bought my radio case at Home Depot and cut the foam myself. I think it was $16.00
The Power Panel is usually installed on the field box and hooked to your 12v battery. Convienient but not necessary.
Nylon props are a little more likely to survive a prop strike on a hard landing than wood. You might want some 11x6-7 props as others have suggested. I like the APC props.
You'll want 2 fuel filters. One for the pick-up line in the fuel jug and one in-line to the carb.
You might want a heat gun in addition to the iron.
I think the control rods that come with the LT-40 will be sufficient.
Tower 6 minute epoxy is fine and you'll also want some 30 minute epoxy.
Titebond wood glue is good stuff.
You'll want some CA - thin and CA- medium glue and some CA debonder for when you glue your hand to the airplane which I seem to do at least once a year.
You'll also need a switch harness to go with the charging jack. Not sure if those are included with the radio.
That's about all but if you're like me you'll end up needing a few other items and tools.
Happy flying !!

Spinner comes with most planes, might want to check on that.

Get master airscrew props to learn with; very forgiving.

Futaba charge leads for charger: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXL332&P=ML

No need for clevises and control rods.

I use O.S. glow plugs, A8 is a good standard plug to have. I've heard not to use idler bar.

Our club has buddy boxes and cables. Check with yours before you buy.

Get a hobby 12v battery. They are very small and light.

The olny thing i would not use is the glo plug with the idle bar. Not that theres anything wrong, there just somewhat out dated with newer and better glo plug technolgy out you can get better proformance with an OS A8 or even the Tower Sport Plug. Of course i could be wrong so if so, please enlighten me

have you been to the local club yet? A lot of times they have public use buddy boxes to use so you don't need to spent $50 on one.....They're not good for anything after you've soloed.

Personally I would drop the radio case and keep the tx in or attached to the field box. I just to not think I would go to the trouble of casing my tx.

I would get this starter pack
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXL372&P=ML

then you can drop that other 12V battery you were considering and drop the power panel.

I have never built that model airplane and do not know what glues and accessories are required (fuel tank, lines, linkages, etc).

You could go a little cheaper.

On the 12Volt...I bought a motor cycle battery and a Battery Charger from Walmart. The motor cycle battery only has to be charged 1 once for about 4-5 flying days. I think I paid $30 for the battery and $15 for the trickle charger.

I actualy have never ran it dead. After about 4-5 flying days I put it on the charger (which is basicaly a battery tender for motor cycles, Jet skis, and ATV's) and it will take like 40 minute to charge it back up. Thats the reason I bought this set up so I dont have to worry with charging the 12 volt all the time.

I would go to the local club and see if they had the buddy box and cable set up and not buy that. After you solo you will not need it any more.

And the glo plug I just use the OS A3...cant go wrong.

Thanks for the tips so far, guys.

I decided not to get a power panel or 12V battery since I'm going to use a rechargeable glow ignitor, power pack for the starter, and can use my car with the Multiplex charger for the radio or receiver if need be. Also, I am going with 2300mAh NiMH battery for the receiver and plan on topping it off after each flight day so should have plenty of time, especially since I'm a beginner.

I am also going to go with OS plugs since OS makes the engine, even though they're a little more - just don't know if I got the right ones listed, so please check my list and let me know.

Thanks.

Thanks for all your tips, gaRCfield,
I've updated my list with many of them!!

If you're gonna drop the $70 for the multiplex charger you should consider going directly to the Hobbico Accucycle, it's the last charger you'll need. It even does Lipos.

According to the web page, the Multiplex does lipos too. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXKSY1&P=ML bottom of page.

What do yo think of the BC6 for about the same price? http://www.grandrc.com/inc/sdetail/66740

Or the Triton2? http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXMAJ0&P=ML

I would say get the multiplex. It's cheapest and can charge all of the things the other ones can but without the bells and whistles.

Yeah, that's the one I will buy.

I decided to bring my list to the local hobby shop and see if they can not only give me comparable prices but offer any alternatives/suggestions. I'd like to keep the business local if possible in case I have any questions or problems with anything. It's doubtful though that they'll be able to match most prices, in which case I'll go mail order.

Does anyone know if Tower charges tax to NY?

Tower Hobbies is an outlet for Great Planes/Hobbico. My LHS carries Great Planes and will match all of Tower's prices without shipping (though with tax, so it's usually a bit more). I try to support him when possible. On a side note though, I drove out to see him and pay him up front for my new plane last Wednesday. He said he 'forgot' to order it until the following Tuesday. It was a half hour drive and $40 more than Tower (no Tower deals), and is taking weeks to get m product. Don't know how much I'll be returning there[&o]

Anyway, point is that LHS's can and will be competitive with Tower, sometimes you just have to ask.
