Default Stater batterys?

Do all batterys for glow starters have to be 1.3aH and what does that mean?

Thanks!

No,they dont have to be.The ah is the amount of power the battery can store.Basically the larger the amp hour rating,the longer the battery will last between charges.You can use about any 12 volt battery for your starter.The type you have pictured are common in our hobby.They are lightweight and safer than a lead acid battery(lawnmower/motorcycle type).Thats a pretty good price in the ad you have.

Keep in mind, this is a 12V battery for running an electric starter motor that spins the engine. It isn't for heating the glow plug.

To charge it, you can use a variety of 12V chargers but a simple wall charger is usually all that's necessary. It fact, you can get a higher capacity battery and charger combo from Horizon: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...x?ProdID=HAN19

you can also buy an inexpensive charger separately: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXL353&P=0

For your glow plug, you'll need something like this: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXD699&P=0

1.3 AH is a pretty small capacity for a starter IMO. You should get the 7AH battery listed in post 4. A bit more money but worth the difference.

The largest SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) battery I could fit in my field box was a 12Ah battery, which costs about $40 with shipping. It's heavy, but it has plenty of capacity for powering my electric starter & electric fuel pump, as well as running my field chargers to charge up my RX/TX batts and LiPo packs for my small electric planes. I've found BatteryMart.com to have a pretty good selection and prices:

Since you are apparently new to using this type of battery, I'll alert you to two of the most common problems that will seriously limit the lifetime of your Pb based cells; deep discharge and to high a charge rate. Lead acid batteries do not take kindly to deep discharge, as soon as your battery falls to 11.9 volts under load, recharge. Never charge a sealed lead acid battery at a higher rate than 0.1C (700 ma for a 7 amphour battery). The advice to get a larger capacity battery is a good one. While slightly heavier, most lawn mower batteries are a good choice of low cost and high capacity. They are heavier and require some maintenance such as adding distilled water occasionally and AWAYS KEEP UPRIGHT. Check out www.rcbatteryclinic.com for some good advice on the care and maintenance of all types of batteries.

The battery you linked http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...?ProdID=HAN167 is mostly intended to go in the Hangar 9 Starter Source, which is a battery box designed to be attached to a Hangar 9 electric starter. The charger that's intended to be used with it is http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...?ProdID=HAN166

Battery 14.99
Charger 9.99
Total 24.98

Since you followed up with a question about power panels I now get the impression that the battery will be used for more than just a starter. If you will be running starter, fuel pump, field charger, etc off of one 12 volt battery you need to go for higher capacity.

The 7Ah batteries seem to be a decent compromise of weight and capacity. There is a Hangar 9 battery/charger combo available for $29.95
http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...x?ProdID=HAN19

I havethe power panel -pkh- linked and like it pretty well. It has voltage indicators that tell me when the battery is getting low. Of course those lights do drain the battery if you forget to turn off the switch.

".I also keep a small 12v 7ah battery in my box for the starter and the glow panel, ..Rog

One extra nice thing about this panel is that it will keep your glow plug starter charged if you forget to do it at home. Never over-charge ANY of your batteries though.

if you are using that setup battery attached to the starter, you dont really need the power panel or a traditional wooden flight box....
its just adding complexity and luggage to carry.
glow stick and not the one that attached to the panel.
Fuel pump is better when its manual.
check this one: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXL372&P=ML

The Tower Hobbies Hobbico Power Core Starter Pack MkII works BEST when used with a pair of Wolfpack (or other racing ) batteries and a Heavy Duty starter...

e.g.

[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXL372&P=ML]Hobbico Power Core Starter Pack MkII - Click me![/link]

[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTJH4&P=ML]WolfPack Batteries - Click me![/link]

[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXL398&P=ML]Hobbico TorqMaster 180 Heavy Duty - Click me![/link]

Yes the batteries FIT inside the Power Core case, and you can throw out that almost useless 12v battery they include.

Throw it all together and you'll have no problems starting engines up to 50CC in size, while not having to recharge the starter each night...

One charge may last you for a few weeks worth of starts.

Just use the starter jacks on the panel, or do what I did, wire up another jack on the side of your field/starter box for a separate battery connection.

The starter jack on the power panels are not fused, so for some added safety I installed a 20A fuse on the extra battery jack. Now I can hook up a charger and run it while I use the starter jack to start my nitro planes.

Well, if you can handle wiring the power panel to the battery, I'm sure you can figure out how to wire another jack to the battery as well. Below are photos of my field box. The removable starter box on the end has the 12V 12Ah SLA battery in it. Both the power panel and the jack on the side are wired to the SLA battery inside.
