Default No more Aerostars?!!

I'm always reading how the Midwest Aerostars have been such a great trainer for so many years and now I see that they are discontinued?!! I have two of the 40s, first one was for my 9yr old son and a second for parts. I have been so impressed with this plane that I meticulously stripped down the second one and rebuilt it (using new window decals made by Bad Brad Graphics) along with strengthening the wing for really hard use and put an O.S. 55AX in it.
It really tears up the skies! Plus they even look fast just standing still.

I was thinking about building a 60 size Aerostar when I noticed that they are discontinued. Might anyone know where I could acquire some plans?

MidWest quit making kits a very long time ago. I looked for plans in my catalogs for this plane and found nothing listed. You may find one of the kits on Ebay and buy one then make templates of all the parts for future builds.
I now make templates for every kit I come across because kits are being discontinued every day.

Yeah, I bought a Midwest Aerobat a while back and it too has been discontinued. It was a fine performing high-wing aerobat trainer.

Real shame to lose these. My club has two club trainers, an LT-40 and an Aerostar. Both terrific trainers. Word is that Sig may be in trouble, too; LHS reports long, long delays in getting orders filled.

Thanks ro347! Bad Brad's vinyl windows really helped.

Boy, I'd also hate to see Sig go under! Also might someone still have plans for the Aerostar that someone could purchase or have a copy made?

Top Gun,

I am feeling the SIG problem. I ordered a SIG Kougar Mark II in November as a winter build and still have no kit. Every time I call there is one reason or another that the kit has not been shipped. This is too bad because everything I have seen from SIG is really good quality.

Seen a Kougar out at our local airfield the other day and the gentleman flying it made it dance. Make me sad to think they may not be able to stay in business.

I have alwasy thought the Aerostars had a cool look to them. It is shame to see them discontinued. Han2007, I really like yours! It turned out great. I bet it really hauls with the 55AX in it! I stuck one in my tower Trainer and it was scary fast!

Platinum, I happen to have two 40 size Aerostar manuals. Email me an address and I'll send you one of them. Also I see no reason why it couldn't be converted into a tail dragger.

Also TruBlu02, your right about the 55AX. I run it with a 12x8 Type K, Master Airscrew prop and my Aerostar has all the power that I could hope for. It'll slow to a crawl and floats in for landings and has the power for unlimited vertical climb. Once I was bringing it in for a landing and just as I was about to gracefully touch down someone standing behind me asked how much power it had. I gunned it at the last second and the plane leaped straight up in the air and just kept going.
It's incredibly hard to beat a 55AX power wise in a .40 to .46 size airplane. I've also got one in my .46 size Hanger 9 Twist and it is ridiculous the power it has.

NO problem converting to a tail dragger, in fact the " AeroBat " ( Aerobatic version of the Aero Star ) instructions showed how and the ARF actually had an extra landing gear block pre installed. All you had to do was figure out how you wanted to control the tail wheel.

I have both and have trike and tailwheel versions. My tail wheel models are on a swivel . A lot of folks don't like that version as it takes some getting used to. ( SKILL ) ( i won't belittle them here )

As far as power goes, I've seen them flown with 35's all the way to 91's, one of mine has a Sato 50 4 cycle and flies great.

There are still some " KITs " out in shops etc. and probably a couple ARF's somewhere. If there are any AeroBat's I have a feeling they aren't for sale, that is one great plane. I wish MidWest had released the rights to both of them to a GOOD company.

I'm going to be off here for a month or so but if I can help you with any info on either plane let me know, I've had all the AERO's and then some. ENJOY !!! RED

When you finish your post, save it by clicking on OK at the bottom, then once it's posted, edit the posting. Right at the bottom of the editing page is "click here to upload images and files".
