RE: help picking first plane
I've put together a list of planes that make good trainers and second planes. All of them on the list are proven planes that are well suited for successfully letting students learn to fly, or advance to a second plane. Check out the list here
Hope this helps

Get the Hanger 9 Alpha 60 ARF best trainer for the money i've seen. I have one and still fly it today when I want something slow and easy. It's a great plane. Have fun, Lanny

RCKen's list is about as complete and informative as you will ever find. Any of those planes will work well. You might also want to stop by your local club and see what the guys there recommend and what is popular. That way there will be plenty of people familiar with the plane, engine, radio, etc.

RE: help picking first plane
I can vouch for the Alpha 60. That is what I used last year to learn with. I really liked the larger 60 size over the 40 sized trainers. I have since donated it to the club I fly at for others to learn with. I am sure there are many great trainers available, but only have flown the Alpha. Very durable, easy to get ready, and the Evolution engine ran flawless for the 5-6 gallons of fuel I put through it.

RE: help picking first plane
I still like the Avistar, mainly due to the semi-semetrical airfoil so you can get a feel for basic aerobatics before you move on, with a g-51 (80$ i think) it will go straight up. It does fly a little faster then most trainers but is very stable, and quite durable, I had several crashes and at the most it, would be an hour to fix, mostly waiting for glue to dry. Another plane I would recommend that I'm sure some people won't agree with me on, is the Modeltech Magic, it was my second plane and I thought it was easier to fly then any trainer, it will fly at about a fast walking pace and is very light and stable, and works perfect with cheap engines or even a cheap brushless setup.

I bought a used Hobbyzone super cub and love it! It's cheap and small enough to take to the park and fly. It also takes abuse quite well. Oh and did I say it's dead simple to fly, just keep the anti crash system disabled it will actually cause crashes.
