Default What is Optical Coupling?

New to electrics. Would someone explain what Optical Coupling is in relation to ESC's. I am making the change from nitro to electric power. Thanks in advance for your help.

Signals are converted to light and passed to a sensor, vice a direct electronic connection.

Its a technique for isolation from interference

A gas engine sometimes uses an "optical kill switch", same principal, the information is passed via light pulses so theres no direct wired connection between the ignition and the receiver.
