Extending the ESC to motor wires is the safest bet. If you need to extend the battery side, you need to add capacitors to smooth out voltage ripple that will likely damage the ESC.

I have a "short" extension 1 1/2" inch, on the battery side on one plane. It is a small plane and has been flying for years. I do not think I am pulling a ton of power through it. It has worked for me, but your mileage may vary.

Extend motor wires, and keep the battery wires short. Keep controller(s) close to battery(s):
