Default New Himax "Outrunner"

Hey Guys,

They are coming out with a new Himaxx Outrunner motor! They say its the same size as a AXI 2808.

No look at this, for only $55.99 you get the motor, bullet connectors, 3D Wobbly Prop Saver, GWS Stick Mount, Mounting Screws and get this -Firewall mounting Plate like the $23 one for the AXI's. All included! No more worries about stripping spur gears or buying expensive AXIs. Hobby-Lobby got some competition.

Looks great! I wonder how it would work on a GWS warbird?

It's nowhere near as big as an AXI 2808 - those weigh 80g, the Himax is 47g - the same size as an AXI 2208, but able to deal with much greater power input (~110W). There are several threads over in RC Groups on the Himax 2808-980.

Has anyone tried this motor out in real flight yet? I ordered mine yesterday so it's too late for me if it stinks.

More details about this here:

http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/him...or_3661927.htm

Judging from the thrust it can produce this is a competitor to the AXI 2208 and NOT the AX 2808

(very interesting none the less as it could be great on a shockflyer)

Wow! Can u believe it? E-flite has their own outrunner too!! You can get it in a 1080 kv or 1360 kv. Its costs $49.99 but don't think it includes the ability to go on a wood stick.

Extremely lightweight—just 1.6 ounces
High-torque direct-drive motor—no gearbox necessary
Motor mount, prop adapter and all hardware included
External rotor design with front shaft for easy mounting
Includes gold bullet connectors

Size: 25mm (1 in) x 28mm (1.1 in)
Weight w/Gearbox: 45 g (1.6 oz)

E-flite’s new Outrunner series of high-quality brushless motors provides great efficiency and light weight— just 1.6 ounces. They’re ideal for small electric airplanes. such as the E-flite Tensor 4D.

Just got my new Himax outrunner in the mail yesterday. Mounts right on the GWS stick -sweet!. Very smooth and quiet. Will try it out on my E-Starter this weekend and post impressions.

Default RE: New Himax "Outrunner"

I flew the new Himax outrunner today on my E-Starter. The plane is a little heavy due to glassing and a bunch of epoxy due to previous mishaps. I have use the stock GWS 350 motor, a Himax 2015-4100 and an e-flight 400 on this plane with a 9.6v 700mA battery. I flew today with a GWS9070 prop. The new Himax easily outperforms the previous mentioned powerplants. Today was fairly windy with steady 10-15mph breeze with gusts to 20. Normally I would ground the plane in this wind, but it flew with good authority and made decent headway into the wind with great aerobatic performance (for this type of plane). I would highly recommend this motor for the price for anyone using a GWS stick mount. I'm am going to resurrect my busted GWS spitfire and try this motor on it after repairs. The prop saver is a nice add on. The motor is very smooth and quiet.

I've read great things about the AXI lines but never tried one due to cost and mounting issues, but this little inexpensive outrunner ROCKS!

I'm glad to hear it works so well. It looks like they just came out with a series of bigger Himax Outrunners (more like the Axi 2212's??).
[link]http://www.azarr.com/brushless_motors.htm[/link]
There's a 0650, a 0850 and a 1080. I'm hoping the 0850 is a cheaper equivalent of the Axi 2212-26. Anybody have more information on them?

Actually the big ones will be out in a month or so. Now there are two motors and each one comes in 3 different KV's. These 2 compare with the AXI 2208 and 2212 series. We have been shipping tons of hem and the results have been great. These motors are a really good value as they come with three mounting options out of the box.

Would the bigger of the two work on a mini Funtana?

Thanks

I've been flying my Himax 2808-0980 in my Tensor using a GWS 9x5 prop (recommended by Todd's Models). Flies well but I broke the prop - oops. What props are you guys using on the 2808-980?? Would an APC 10 x 4.7SF be too much of a load? (I need a whattmeter.) I'm using a Phoenix 10 esc and 3-cell lipos. Thanks in advance!

I am running the 2808-980 on an E-Flite Ultimate. I have only tried two props, an APC 9 x 4.7 and an APC 10 x 4.7. I am getting 8.4 amps on the 9 inch prop and 11 amps on the 10 inch prop. I have not purchased a specialty watt meter yet, but these figures are from my digital multimeter hooked up inline from the battery.

Hi there,

When using this motor on a GWS plane, is the motor shaft not to low, compared to where the gear shaft sits on the stock motors? it looks about 15mm lower?

Be aware that the maximum current draw for this motor is 10A and it will get really hot, really fast if you approach or exceed that!

Actually, Dr. Kiwi, I must disagree. Maxx products lists the max amperage at 12 amps for a 15 second burst in their literature that comes with the motor. It can also be downloaded from their site if you want to check it out.

That being said, you are correct about watching the amperage draw on this little motor. I try to keep the WOT to a minimum with the larger prop so it doesn't get too hot. Hovering with the larger prop is around 3/4 throttle with a 13 ounce plane. I'm running a CC25 speed controller and a 10 C 1250 mah pack, so the motor is the weak point to be sure. Being in the cold weather right now, I have yet to see the motor even warm let alone hot. It is an impressive little piece!

Thanks for the warning!

I have a 2812-850 in a Fomosa, and I am very happy with the performance.
Be aware that the shaft is fairly brittle.
Mine broke instead of the prop once. (APC SF 8X6)
Maxxprod.com is a good source of replacement shafts, and the repair is quick and easy.

I am very interested in the new Himax HC 2808-0980 motor , but will a Kokam 3s 11.1 700 mah battery be able to work this motor. If so would I have to use a smaller prop ?
Thanks Ted

I just ordered a Himax outrunner to put on a "SPAD" foamie I'm building... this one is the AXI 2212-26 equivalent. I liked the included stick mount and prop saver. Got it at Stevens Aeromodels...

http://www.stevensaero.com/cart/cart...category_id=49

Going to hook it up with a Castle Creations 25A controller and a Great Planes 3S 11.1V 1500mAh LiPo pack and a 10x7 prop... I'll post again when I know how it works out...

IMO himax outrunners are 1 iof the best deals for the money..i have 2 of the 2812-1080s..using them in a mini piper and a sky scooter...and the best prices i found on them were at GRANDRC..ask for Ed..he will also give ya 1 heck of a combo deal..with free shipping and fast shipping...i thing i recommend ,,take off the himax sticker that is stuck on the motor..mine came off after a few flights..and since i mount my motors inside of the nose,,it was casuing friction and overheated the motor..becuase it worked its way off the mtoor and got stuck between the spinning bell and the styrofoam..

Ted Harrold:

You may find that a battery of that size may not deliver the amps that you want depending on the discharge rate of the battery. A small prop will help in this case. A 9 x 4.7 max if the pack has at least a 10C discharge rate. You may still not have enough battery then.

Ted, I have a 2812-850/Phx25 on my slow stick. I have 2 batteries, a TP 1320 and aTP 2100. The 1320 will hit LVC fairly easily off a fresh charge at WOT, and never hit it wit the 2100 (untill the end of charge). So I'd guess your 700 isn't up to the task.

I can't say I agree with the brittle shaft comment. I just nosed into the pavement at nearly WOT (handlaunched with wrong model on radio). I tore the motor down, examined the shaft, and was back up and flying in 10 minutes. The shaft was perfect, I just had to bend the mount back a bit and after readjusting the collar.

FWIW, I'm much happier with the 2812 outrunner than I am with the 2025-4200 geared POS in my Formosa.

I agree..my shafts have held up well too....I has some horrendous nose crashes while trying to get my mini piper tweaked right..and it never broke the shaft or bent it..and my himax is direct drive...
