Default Brushless outrunner won't run??

I have a problem with my new ultrafly outrage. I was just about to go down to the park and give it a whirl, when I tested to insure the motor would spin the right way and I found that it would just sit there and jitter back and forth. I played around with the throttle and still the same. Occationly it would spin slowly but then it would just stop and jitter back and forth. What it happening?? The motor was getting quite hot when this was happening too. Do I need a 3 cell pack to fly it. I've only got a 2cell 1200mAh lipo pack at the moment. The motor is a ultrafly B/06/10, and I'm using a ultrafly typhoon 15 esc and 10x4.7 prop. Any ideas????? Oh, it also make a nasty squealling noise while it jitters back and forth..

What do you mean by a bad connection. I am not that good a soldering but the joints a strong and there is plenty of solder on the joint. Is excess solder a problem?? could the bad joint be in the motor itself?? I am really lost here....?????

rusteytumbles that might not be the problem have you got another esc you can try or it could be a short inside motor is the motor new or has it had a few nose ins or bean droped, is there any play in the sharft could it be a worn bearing

Motor is band new never been flown or dropped. I tried another speed controller and it does a similar thing. Sometimes it will turn over at say 1000-2000rpm at full throttle for 5-7 seconds then stop. The motor gets extremely hot when this happens. The ESC does not get hot, nor does the battery.

are you confident enough to pull it apart and see if you can see any broken joints

Yeah I can have a look. Broken joints in the windings or where the wire go into it??

yea but im no expert if its a brand new motor im sure you can change it over at your LHS if not id give it a go just look at where the wires go behind the backing plate

I've put in on the charger twice and it reads over 8.4 when fully charged.

Hi Rusty,
Have you tried changing the advance or timing rate on the ESC? I'm not familiar with the Ultrafly line, my CC Phoenix 45 has 3 settings, and they can make a difference.
Hope this helps.[8D]

I have since been told that the typhoon ESC is not suited to lithium batteries. However I have tried a second ESC and it does the same thing????

I AM HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM! I have a new typhoon from park zone, and my engine did this today in mid-air. Was going fine, and then just jammed on me. I'm lucky the plane landed well. Same thing, just jittering back and forth. I'm using the NiMH stock batteries with it. I recently replaced the fuselage, which makes me question if it is an electric problem, since I had to solder the on/off toggle back on. My servos work great though? Let me know if you figure this puzzle out.

Sounds like you have a connection problem internal on the motor on one of the windings. On a brushless motor you are running three phases hence three wires feeding power. If any one of them open the motor will stall and will draw excessive current (Amps) thus overheating. Depending upon how the wire lead is attached to the stator lead may bring you to the problem. I bought a small motor from e-bay which was supposed to be rated at 25A, but at 10A the motor would stall. After checking the internal connection I discovered the wires were soldered and as the temp raised the solder would melt and I lost the connection then when it cooled the connection would make again. It's a great little motor but max amps is limited to 8 constant.
An easy test is to check resistance with a meter between all three leads of the motor. All of them should read the same between any two. If any one lead has open resistance that winding or lead is open. There will only be less than a couple of ohms on a good motor. Hope this helps.

Tony

I second what Tony said. I have a brushless inrunner that I ran too hot once, and the solder melted from one of the bullet plugs. The motor would just twitch and then do nothing, and my ESC didn't give me the "GTG" beeps that it normally does. I pulled the plug off the loose wire and resoldered it, and it worked fine again. So check the bullet connectors to see if the solder / wire has loosened, and check the connections on the inside for the same.

Thanks for the help guys. I sent the motor and speedy back to the shop. I not sure what they have replaced but I should have them back by mid next week. Hopefully I can get the foamy into the air and have some fun..

Had the same problem. Turned out to be a bad soldering connection on one of the three wires.
