Using a larger than required ESC is fine and is not the cause of your problem.

Have you checked the battery voltage to be sure it is fully charged? Batteries are not usually fully charge when you purchase them, so if it is a new battery, you should charge it first.

The symptoms you describe sound to me like the low-voltage cutoff (LVC) is kicking in. The LVC is designed to cut off power to the motor if the battery voltage gets too low. I can think of a couple of reasons why this might happen.

1. The battery is not fully charged. You could have a bad battery or a bad charger, or you forgot to charge the battery. Check the voltage. A fully charged lipo should measure 4.2V per cell. So a 3-cell pack will measure 12.6V when fully charged.

2. The battery capacity or C rating is too small for the motor/prop you are running, causing battery voltage to sag below LVC when you throttle up.

3. The LVC setting of your ESC is incorrect. Example: You are running a 3-cell battery but LVC is set for 4 cells.

What battery and prop are you using with this setup?

If you can't solve the problem, consider going back to the store where you bought the equipment and asking for assistance. Take everything with you - plane/motor/prop/battery/radio, etc. - so you can demonstrate what is happening.

Do you know the "C" rating of your battery? What brand is it?

the problem is probably that the esc is programed for a 4 or 5cell and the LVcutoff is ingageing. just get out the paper work that came with the esc and reprogram it for a low voltage cutoff on a 3cell. BEN T

I just experienced the very same thing,m there's no doubt about it in my mind that what SC racer is saying is your problem.
You need a fully charged battery.
You need the ESC set for 3 cells.
Being a 60 amp controller it very well may be set for 4 cells, which'll kick in the LVC almost instantly. Doug

One other thing to look at: once I had a Phoenix 45 and with a big Mega outrunner it would shut off at only modest throttle opening (only 8-10A or somewhere round there, when the motor was propped for 35A at WOT). The solution suggested by Castle was to disable "current limiting"... worked like a charm.
