I was wondering if the motors from Hobbyking.com are good motors to use in my 3D yak. Does anyone use the turnigy motors such as..

There have been some issues with these SK motors (loose magnets etc) and the 550W is a joke... but at 300W-350W or so you should be okay.

If you consider this Turnigy to be roughly the equivalent of the slightly lighter AXI 2814-12 (105g, 1390Kv)... one assumes AXI know what they are doing in terms of determining safe power limits, but if you look at the "suggested uses" nowhere on their table do they show more than 273W-in! http://www.modelmotors.cz/index.php?...e=12&line=GOLD

I have 2 of the 35-36-1400 motors, and they are pretty decent, especially for the price. However, as Dr. Kiwi says, I wouldn't try to run it at 550 watts. I run mine very hard on 3S with a 10X7E prop, and pull a constant 325-350 watts, and it performs excellent, but I really don't think I would push it too much harder. I did test run one on 4S with a 9X7.5E prop on my GP P47, and it hauled, *****, but it really pushed the motor hard.
I will say this though, the 35-36-1400 is a thirsty motor, be sure you have a decent capacity pack with it. A 3S 2650ma pack only lasts 4 1/2 to 5 minutes, only pushing it moderately.

The AUW of that plane is expected to be around 2.6lbs, I would recommend probably the 35-42-1250 instead. You would be able to run it on 3S, and should perform pretty well.
Put a drop of household oil in the berings before you put it together, it will last longer if you do.

As far as the magnet issues, it's mostly the larger motors (50mm and up) that seem to have issues. I have a 50-65-350 that had magnets come loose. I returnd it, and they sent me another one that is good.

I have many Turnigy motors, from the 35-30-1400's, all the way up to the 50-65, and all are decent for the money. They do have bearing issues though, as long as you oil them, they work fine.

with a 40a esc, 3s 2200mah lipo be able to power the yak for atleast some 3Dflying?

Depending on how you prop it, the 40 amp controller should be ok, but the 2200 packs are a bit small. Wouldn't give you very long flights, and unless you used a 30C or higher pack, the discharge rate would most likely limit your power too.
I would look into a 3300ma or 4000ma pack if you plan on doing 3D, takes alot of juice to hover.

Do you have a wattmeter? If not, I would strongly suggest you get one. It will help you select the best prop for your setup, and make sure you don't draw too much current.

K so im thinking the setup with that turnigy motor, 40amp esc, with a 3cell 2200mah 30c lipo. I will be flying some 3D but not hardcore 3D. Should give me enough power.

Plan to re powering a 6lbs Mustang II (not a warbird) pylon racer type (removing OS Max).

Thinking HobbyKing's TR50-65 350KV ($29.78) powered with Turnigy 6 cell, 6S2P HXT2200 LiPo/ 60A BEC/ 18x10 APC prop / 1200 WATTS
OR
4S 4100 PACKS (x2) @ 42 AMPS/ 900 WATTS driving 17X10 APC-E @ 6000RPM...... 16X10 APC-E should drop 5 amps (to 37A) @ 6100RPM

If you really need 1200W for a 6lb Mustang, then 6s is better than 4s... I see guys are using 6s, even 8s on this motor. Even if you don't need as much as 1200W then a higher cell count/lower amps is the way to go.

I 've  got the Turnigy 35-30-1100kv in my Yak 55Sp 10e. it hauls ass in that aircraft but AUW is just a sliver under 800gr (which is heavier than this aircraft is intended to be).
Spnning a APC 10x5 prop through a turnigy Plush 60A ESC it does a fantastic job but the ESC gets hot.
I've moved it to under the engine cowl next to the motor but now the CG is too far forward. Tried balancing it with 2200mAH Hyperion 11.1V 35C packs. Has not worked out too well. The Turnigy is about 10gr heavier than the Waypoint 3008 -26 series I have in the flight box.

The Turnigy stuff is pretty good and i think I'm the only person I know of who has had a speed control blow a fet. Pretty reliable motors and ESC's for the money.
For ultimate performance and 3D I'd spend the cash and get Hyperion. The battery packs, motors and ESC are lighter than the competition for the same punch

I was thinking about running 3 of the 3s1p 11.1v 2200mah batteries in series to get a 9s3p 33.3v equivalent on a 50-65D 270kv motor with the 16x10 APCE with the plush 80amp esc. I am planning on putting this setup in the new E-flight extra 300 that is coming out this May. Originally was planning on just running two of the batteries in series, but looking at the los Kv of the motor, and the lower ground clearance of this plane I don't want to have to go up to the 19x12 prop they recommend for 6s.Anyone have any thoughts?
