Help, need a large, low kV motor.

I've been looking for a pair of large low kV electric motors and am hoping to get some leads on here.

So far my Ideal motor selection would be the Turnigy 80-100-B 130kV motor but I fear they may no longer be available?

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=5142

Any thoughts on an alternate option, or where I can find a couple of these? I know the quality isn't superior in this brand so was aiming to get 4 of them to use 2 and keep 2 as spares.

Thanks for any input!

The 80-80 are back ordered but they seem to come back in stock in a few weeks. Those XP motors have been back ordered for years.

RE: Help, need a large, low kV motor.

Thanks for the input. I really like the idea of the low 130kV motor. I want to turn a 4-blade 24" prop and I know that motor has successfully done it with a low amp draw (under 100A) as a direct drive. Guess my only real option will be to come up with some sort of belt drive reduction system to reduce the speed and keep the torque. The ultimate home for these is in a twin project that will weight around 35-38 lbs I'm guessing.
Keep the ideas/options coming! Thanks!

I didn't see it not coming back but while I was on the page it was offered to me for $97 via one of the HK little pop up windows.

You test them yet?

What are you going to put those in?

With 24" 4-blade props I know it's going to be BIG. :)

Nope not yet, still need the props. It's for a 100" DH Sea Hornet. [8D]

RE: Help, need a large, low kV motor.

1,474 g
4,422 w
35.3 pounds

140kv x 12S 44.4v = 6,216 rpm

4-blade 21x12 @ 6216 RPM

34.2 Static Thrust
70.6 MPH
4,760 watts
107.2 amps

X 2 = 68.4 pound plane

68.4 x 16 = 1094.4
1094.4 ÷ 9.98 = 109.65
109.65(X^Y).6666 = 22.90
22.90 x 144 = 3298

3,298 ²" wing area plane.
47.7 oz. ²' wing loading
34.5 MPH stall speed
86.25 MPH top speed

Nice!

I get a 162" wing span with a 20.3" cord with those motors. :)

What do you get with a 24x16 ish prop?

AmishWarlord 03-22-2012 03:00 PM

RE: Help, need a large, low kV motor.

On a 12S " the slowest and larget prop"

6216 rpm
58.4 pst
94.1 MPH
10,830 watts
243.9 amps

24's are just to large for those motors.

Those are huge motors, they will easily make almost 6HP but they can't swing those 24's in direct drive.

AmishWarlord 03-22-2012 03:06 PM

RE: Help, need a large, low kV motor.

An electric prop should be no larger than 1/4 the wing span on a single and I'd guess 1/8 on a twin.

100" should be about 12.5" props.

...and this is for 2-blade props, multi's would be even smaller.

AmishWarlord 03-22-2012 03:13 PM

RE: Help, need a large, low kV motor.

OK a 4-blade 24"x 16 prop at 5,000 rpm will make,

37.8 pst
75.7 mph
5336 watts / 7.6 HP
120.1 amps
149 watts per pound.

You need a 140kv motor thats will take a 12S pack and weighs 1778g

$750 each and he needs two. Ouch!

Then again the flite packs will be $600 each and good for a 5 minute flight then thown away in a sesone or tow.

Plus $1k for props and blades...at some point the accountant steps in. Lol. If the concept proves to work I could always upgrade motors one day.
