E-Flight 370 Question

I have the tribute plane, and am going with the brushless Park 370 motor, 25 amp Castle Creation ESC, and 3 cell 1340 LIPO 11.1v thunderpower batteries.

After buying the parts, I see that I have the Park 370 5400 model, and the instructions recommned the Park 370 4100 model.

Whats the difference between the 5400 and the 4100 series?

Lastly, is an APC 12x6 prop ok for this? Any other options?

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

I am far from an expert on that engine, but the main problem you will encounter is additional nose weight caused by the engine.

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

I am not a expert either but I have experience with both motors. The KV rating basicly represents RPM's per volt, the 5400 will turn more RPMs than the 4100 at the same voltage. The E-flite 12x6 prop is to large for the 5400, it will pull as much as 18 amps and will overheat the motor,

I have a Tribute with the 5400 and the TP1320 pack I run a APC 10x 4.7 and it works very well. I'm not sure if the 5400 weighs more or not but it has not been an issure for me either way

What are you putting that in Dave? I may want to copy you:D as I know you are fast company. Here is what I have going.

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

I'm putting it in a e-flight tribute.

I don't mind propping down, it should have plenty of Umphff.

I'd prefer a higher diameter, low pitch prop. how bout the 11 x 4.75 or something similar??

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

I have both eflite park 370s in GWS D (6.6:1) gearboxes and have experimented with them on a tribute-like 3D foamy. the 5400 can run an apc 9x3.8 on the gen2 tp1320 3 cell packs and be in the recommended power range... still 10ish amps forgot exactly... going bigger and it gets hot quick... since these are new motors I didn't want to push anything so I keep them so after a 15 minute flight of lots of hovering it comes back very warm but not too hot to hold.

the 4100 I use a gws 1047 for now and I get around the same 10 ish amps and good performance I've tried a number of props all around these sizes but the motor and then the battery start heating up more the bigger you go (pitch or diameter) I suppose if you kept it to small bursts you could go bigger but pretty much temp can be a good test. Fly awhile like you normally do and land and see if motor and battery are getting hot. Too hot to hold for an extended period and you're pushing them... batteries especially.

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

The smaller prop is actually better in this case. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. The this plane will 3D as well as most 40% gas planes

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

I just purchased the 5400 and CC25 and the LHS said THEY run it with 3 LiPo's and the 11x4.7 APC and the 12x6 GWS props. I planned on checking it with my Wattmeter but I'm glad I saw your postings first. It will be used in FFF planes.

I'm going to try the 11x4.7 and see what it does.

Nice Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.

I am having a lot of problems with the gearing spinning or stripping out on my GWS C gearbox. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

prop saver and CA have helped me with the spur gear stripping!

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

I dorked it a little, and the two bolts that hold the gear box to the engine came loose. Of course, I can't find something the same metric size in my shop...

Fun plane.

Thanks vicman, I guess I will never get use to the "metric" system.

I'll check the maintenance shop at work, I'm sure they will have them.

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

If you are stripping gears it is probably at start up,check your speed control and make sure it is setup for "soft start". You may also try a Himax gearbox http://www.allerc.com/product_info.p...oducts_id=1139 , I have had great success with the Himax gearbox and my Phoenix 25 set to soft start and no brake. The Himax gearbox setup comes with 3 gear ratios, 6.6 to 1, 5.33 to 1 and 4.4 to 1.

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

Thanks Woodchuck, I am missing some of the manual for the Phoenix 25 speed controller set-up can you send me them by pm? I also ordered a mpi aluminum unit today, if that doesn't work I will look into the himax unit like you suggest.

MPI makes the Himax products. The gear boxes are one and the same.

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

I got 5 or 6 flights in today with the plane, and I really like this thing. Perfect for flying in the cul-de-sac over the houses and tree tops.

One thing tht does have me concerned, is that I think I blew a battery pack today. One of my packs work great, and the other seems to have crapped out. Not sure why, I initially was charging at 1.1 amps, but have bumped that down to .5 amp on my triton charger.

When I look at the bad pack, I see that one of the cells looks weird and when I squish it, I see some liquid moving around the battery. I'm pretty sure a cell is bad since it has about 1/2 the power of the other pack I have.

Also, the two way tape is NOT enough to hold the servos in place. Both the rudder and elevator came loose, causing some terrible flutter. I ended up putting a zip tie around each servo, and that seems to have solved it.

The kids in the neighborhood sure seem to like this thing.

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

Forget the zip tie and two side tape and get one of the $.99 hot melt glue guns from wallyworld. they work great for repairs and buildin on foam.;)

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

The Zips seems to be working for now, but I also seemed to have stripped the spur gear on the gear box....

Have to repair that....

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

Holy poop![X(] I just put in a set of MPI gears and the plane wants to take off of the table!!![sm=bananahead.gif] Definately the way to go! Dave, the MPI gears have a little set screw and an aluminium hub for the main gear and a blank with a set screw for the pinon, its a nice set-up. You gotta build one of these F-18s!;)

daven 10-26-2004 07:20 AM

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

I'll check out the gear. I like the F-18, but I only got an electrtic so I could fly in the cul-de-sac in my front yard. I don't think I got enough room for that little rocket.

I already buzzed the old guy raking leaves across the street, not sure what he'd do if I buzzed him at 100 mph.

RE: E-Flight 370 Question

I've gotten ALOT of flights on the tribute, and really love this little plane. It does the best flat spins (inverted and upright), and hovers great. The wing does flex, but it doesn't seem to hurt anything. The gear have held up ok, but I've broken two wheels so far landing on the road.

I replaced the main spur on the gear box, with one from GWS and it is working fine. I think the trick is to get the gear on the motor tight into the spur gear so it can get a bite into the teeth. The one that I stripped was barely touching the main gear, due to how I installed it. I guess you learn slowly with these, just like gas.

I've been using the GWS 10 x 4.7 and seems about perfect for the 5400, battery is warm, but not overly hot when I land.
