Just cleaning up the ports can change the timing to where the sleeve needs to be brought down again.
Diamond needle files is all that I use In the ports as you control every stroke and have better control over the work that way. It´s always easier to remove material, than it is to put it back...
Dremel is for the crude work.

On some engines the timing change is very small, not much more then shaving the chrome layer out of the port.... which can be extremely difficult to do...it is very easy to make a large change in timing, but extremely difficult to make a small change to a individual port

Be it known, I dont have much intention of modifying the engine physically, but moreso determine what pipe will work best with the timing the engine has from the factory. A carb and pipe swap can have more impact than adjusting the actual timing of the ports unless the timing is so low that it needs more to operate better. I wanted to know what the ideal timing is for a car engine for comparison purposes only.

RE: Question for the Experts...
I use several small hand pieces as well as a lathe and a mill
I use this hand piece to cut ports, then I finish with a fine diamond file...this tool cuts very clean and can take very shallow cuts much straighter then can be done with most tools...100 000 RPM means very clean cuts, but must be extremely careful, this tool can chew thru a sleeve like nothing.....

I use this lathe to cut buttons, pistons and sleeves

Enough of the tooling braggery. Let stick to the topic please.
What is your all-time favorite pipe for a high timed 3-port 3cc smallblock, Neal?

I really don't run smallblocks........I use a JP5 on my CRT .5 but that is about the extent of it for me... I pretty much strictly run .21 or larger,,, tho I am doing a few 18TZ for 1/8 Buggy racing on smaller tracks..........Believe it or not, but on the 18TZ in a TK3 buggy the Werks 2058 works very well...

Maybe better to ask if anyone has an opinion on how your specific engine will run best for your intention...what engine is it?

I thought the topic was something else then? Remind me what you are asking?

I know what engines are good and I know several that aren't so good. I'm not well schooled on pipes because it seems there are more pipe options than engine options. Ultimately, I want a pipe with enough adjustability to be used on more than one engine. No two engines are timed the same and as such have different pipe requirements. I don't believe there is any one pipe that is perfectly matched to any two different engines.

RE: Question for the Experts...
If you want an "easy to use tool", this might help you on the way: http://mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/javapipe_de.htm
But you still need to find a pipe, if you can´t make your own.
My best recommendation is to read Gordon Jennings book, that will give you a good starting point.

But as I said, it´s a starting point.

Ultimately, the idea is being to better match a pipe to an engine based on the exhaust timing. Through the process, other thoughts and questions arose. I won't specify the engine or the model it's in because I'm not going to be crucified for my choices. There are too many fanboys here that are dead set on this engine or this pipe and anything else is garbage. Seen it happen too many times.

Who cares what people think of the engines you use/enjoy?
Nice bit of light reading in those links for you...have fun.

The most frustrating thing is that even if you work out what pipe you actually need, finding pipe dimensions online is like finding a needle in a haystack.
