I do not know the model so this is just general advice.

If the engine is fitted with a pull start then the engine will only rotate in one direction (anti-clockwise when viewed from the front (flywheel end)) due to the one way bearing.

New engines in general can be a pain to get running/keep running, experience definitely helps.

The engine will start and run better when you have ran sufficient fuel through it to break it in and you have set the carburettor mixture settings.

The piston on these little engines run in a tapered sleeve/liner...the sleeve/liner has a smaller diameter at the top than the bottom...so as the piston travels to the top then it gets tighter....and when an engine is new often this can be extremely tight.
Warming the engine to a temperature of at least 50 degrees celcius (not more than 100) before attempting to start will help....there are specific things made for this task or you can make something easily or use a heat gun or even a decent hair dryer (just be wary that you do not want to melt plastic- just heat up the sleeve/liner so it expands (so just work the direction of the heat just below the cooling head).

I would not think the actual running of the the engine would cause a spur gear to be chewed up....that could be due to an incorrectly aligned engine or even some debris got trapped between the spur and pinion.
