RE: average life
As Hpi Apollo said. There just to many variables to it, to make any real good answer. You could get as many as 15 or as low as a half a gallon, depending on what you do and how you treat it. Take care of it, and dont run it lean, clean the air filter regularly, use a good fuel filter and use a good fuel and ARO when your not going to be running for a little while and you can see higher numbers.
Run it lean, use the wrong glow plug like a turbo plug in a non turbo engine(have seen that many times) dont clean the air filter or run without a air filter, dont use ARO when your not going to run it for more then a couple days and you'll see lower numbers.

As stated, there are many factors that decide a motors life span, however, if treated correctly with after run oil, and not overheated you can expect the average motor to last from 7-15 gallons..

RE: average life
the better the tuner and maintainer usually makes a longer running enginer, or something. keep it clean, keep it lubed and keep it cool, then hope for the best.
