RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

I thought I had seen these here somewhere before (heck, I thought I GOT them from here lol) but I did multiple searches and came up with nothing so here they are for the world to see once again in their full-color glory!

I dunno how well this is going to work for posting them, if anyone wants the originals let me know.

Also, here are some pics of the porting job I did on my old savage .25... it went from "Yah this truck is fun" to "Holy crap! It's ALIVE!!!"

Nice job and nice find. This will help a lot of people out.

Thanks, when I had originally found them I read them 20 times in a 1 week period debating on whether to give it a shot or not. In the end, I figured "I've got enough cash to buy another motor if this goes sour so I'll do it". And it turns out, it saved me $200 on buy a was .26. Sure I had to go and buy bits for my dremel, but that's negligable in comparison. Plus it was a good learning process for me as to how nitro engines work. My buddy also had me do his old tired motor out of his Nitro RS4 2 and it gave that thing new life as well. Course he blew that one up doing donuts in his driveway full-throttle non-stop lol.

i got a rs4 version 2 so it works good on the nitrostar .15fe?

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

there is no specific engine it will work on, its a general guide, if you are a noob dont even try it, getting the proper tune is way more important, plus the 15fe will be highly underpowered even with it modded

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

to late i already did it. iv ported a set of 289 ford heads and gasket matched them so i kinda know how to handle a dremal and a die grinder. this little sleve cuts much faster than cast iron. and NO i did'nt use a die grinder for this the tune on the car is a little on the rich side, but its safer that way. its to fast for my driving skill as it is, but its raining and i dont have anything else to do

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

Yeah it's just a general guide line for porting and is not meant to be used to try and adjust the timing of the engine.

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

for starters, I don't want this thread to turn into a "You shouldn't do it because..." thread. I wanted this here for those who were looking for info on the technique to porting, not the pros and cons of. There's enough post out there already that debate it. Lets just leave this one to "Tips, Tricks and How-to" for those that want to try it. I was a noob my first time in (although I am good with my hands like that) but still, I knew nothing about what I was doing before I jumped into it. Besides, most people that are going to attempt this are going to try it on dime-a-dozen motors not $300 Sirio's, so worst case scenario is a new sleeve/piston/rod set or a gently used motor off ebay. Heck for that matter, NEW motors can be found for $50+ so why NOT try it just to say you did?

And nitro, have you gotten a chance to run it after porting yet? How'd it turn out? Take any pics?

PS: Just bought my first on-road RS4 18ss (used) and you can bet dollars to tire donuts that I'll be porting it too ;)

BCsavage thanks for the artical. i did mine and people had a s$@t fit when i posted that i did it if i toasted my engine so be it. i got kinda the same response when i did my ford heads. i did'nt go wild and reshape things just knocked out the rough spots it quit rainning so i may get some run thim today ill post my results thanks stan

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

Ohhh by no means did I want it to become a "you cant do this or you cant do that" type of thread. It's a good article about how to port an engine, and most people should try it on a motor that they dont care about before they try it on a high dollar mill. I was just simply saying dont try and adjust the timing of the engine, I felt this is a good tip to epople that are trying to port and that where thinking of changing the port timing.

Sorry 125cchyperman, that wasn't directed at you. I just wanted to make sure it was known the intentions of this thread before it started going sour.

most people should try it on a motor that they dont care about before they try it on a high dollar mill
But as the article states, Sport and midline engines stand to make the most gains. Well for most of us, sport and mid-line engines are what come with the vehicles. To be honest, I don't see the point of performing this kind of work on a higher-dollar motor unless you are racing. In which case, if you are serious about racing a)you leave the port work up to a company like RBMods or b) You are really good at doing it yourself and the article I posted is already a well-known fact to you.

supertib - holy CRAP?! Makes my job look like my 4-yr-old did it with egg-beaters ;) lol Nice job, how'd it turn out for you performance wise? Which motor was that for and did the sleeve originally have that big notch in the base or is that an extreme mod-job?

Savage, let me know how the 18ss turns out.

Is there a similar article for the crank mods?

BCSavage 01-08-2007 11:32 AM

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

Somewhat yes, but it's again all based on the savage 25 motor.

I'm trying to figure out how to turn both articles in PDF's :S

Thank you for the kind words, I am still somewhat of a rookie, but I do have alot of experience with working with metals and engines, so I went into this with a pretty solid skill set...

Anyways the pics of the sleeve are a Mach 427, and the crank is from a STS 30..... I did all the cutting on the sleeve including the big cutout on the front.. This particular Mach 427 is a race only motor used for Truggy in a Hellfire. The motor runs, idles and tunes amazingly well, it also is extremely efficient, on a indoor track we are getting 10 minutes run time, as the heats are 10 minutes and we dont need to refuel... The motor is incredably smooth and linear, with a feel almost like an electric engine, it has no hesitation and excelent throttle modualtion.... As well the motor makes very good power, nothing too insane though... IMO it is almost a perfect Truggy race engine .

Here is a tuning vid I shot of the motor, its hard to tell its performance in a bare feild, but it gives you an idea.... And yes it has a center diff and its still wheelies, he runs 30K in the center....

wow, looks peppy! I was nervous just taking my sleeve out the first time, I'd be in need of new shorts doing what you did. My hat's off to you.

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

I did that once. Before there were magazines or the internet to tell you how to do it. Must have been around 1984. The engine was a K & B .21 when I was racing my Associated RC 500 (1/8 on road nitro). Word of mouth from the expert level guys I raced with was how I learned that and everything else about the hobby.

supertib nice work when that motor wears out you thinking of have it replated or just toss out ? to me it seams it could be replated is all

Excellent threat! I'm bumping it up for now so it will be easier for me to find when I have more time to read it more thoroughly.

lmao, I'd like to see it a sticky but I've never had one of my threads stuck so *shrug* lol

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

Absolutely! But I seriously doubt it will be. RCU has not made any other great instructional threads into a sticky. But until I master the techniques in this thread (particularly the article in the first post), I will continue to bump it up.

I will hopefully acquire a cheap camera and will attempt to post my own modding attempts in this thread as well.

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

I bought a sanding kit for my demerls and also got some polishing compound. I finally figured out how to smooth and polish the surface work. Though the work is completely novice, I am quite proud of myself on what I have achieved. Since the K4.6 crank is an old one, I am not too concerned that I might have ruined it. I'll simply buy a new K4.6 crank on-line for about $16 (about $20 with S&H).

What I am trying to master is the ability and skill to cut smooth rounded surfaces without any faceted faces. That is really tough for me now.

After about 4 to 5 hours a couple of weekeneds ago, I heavily modified the crank I am working on and sculpted much the same features that Supertib has put on his D30M crank. The past two days, I sanded, smoothed, and polished the crank face. In all, I have put about maybe 8 hours of work.

My next attempt is to modify the induction port timing.

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

good job... PICS! lol

my next experiment is going to be epoxying a crank. Prolly on my 18ss but not till a) I've played with it as-is for a while since the car is still new to me and I haven't driven it yet and b) I've got the money for new parts/motor should something go awry when I do take the rotary to the poor unsuspecting small-block lol

SAVAGEJIM 01-23-2007 09:02 PM

RE: RC Car Actions "How to port a Nitro Engine"

Good luck! I hope you have success on it!

As far as the epoxy, what kind of epoxy is that and where can you buy it? The way a K4.6 crank is milled in the induction port, the shape is terrible for the sake of fluid flow. I would so fill that hole and sculpt a new passageway.

I'm looking at my crank now and I so want to put up pics! [:o] I so want to hear what tips you guys can give to improve my skills.
For the want of a camera, all I can do is talk about it. I so want to show my work too.
