    DA 100 or 3W 106 for Carden 35% Edge

Looking for opinions for a motor for a new Carden 35% Edge. Either DA 100 or 3W QS 106. I have ruled out my BME 110 due to the fact that the Cardens tend to come out tail heavy with even a DA or 3W, so going DA or 3W. I would like to hear everyones opinion based on performance of the motor, and not customer service. (I mention CS because I have had great luck from both DA and 3W in this department)

This is almost like comparing apples to apples both engines will give you incredible perfomance. I've run both on Composite Arf 33% Extras and there is no difference in performance.

I would agree both are great engines but the QS definitely has more power it turns a 2" bigger prop same RPMs or slightly more. The non QS seems to be about the same as the DA. Mark

Go DA and you wont be sorry! I can tell you this through one summer of pain and poor customer service with NEW engines. I switched to DA and will NEVER go back!

Think I am putting in an order for a QS 106, unless I can see an impressive video of a carden 35% edge with a DA 100.

I have a 35% carden edge with a DA 100. If you want to see a short video of it. Check out our clubs web page. Westendwings.com
look under club videos. I think it's the second video down. It's a short video but it will give you an idea of the power to weight ratio pulling out of a hover. I got johnson mufflers and a 28x10 mejzlik turning at 6600.

RE: DA 100 or 3W 106 for Carden 35% Edge

First of all the airplane was designed around a DA. If you look at the front of the DA the right jug is forward. It is just the opposite on the 3W, this might be a consideration when mounting the cowl. Carden dosen't say to use duck work if using the DA. I would however ducked the 3W. I love the DA. And have one in my 35% Carden Edge. I also would recommend a prince Prop 27/10. We will soon be testing a 26/11 Prince.

I have yet to see anyone part with a QS. DA is a good motor too. I have had 3W 50, 70,75,100toc,106, 140toc and currently a QS 150, not one problem of any of them since I started flying 11 years ago. But I am open to trying other stuff, hence asking about the DA.

Buddy had a 150qs, hated it and took it off. It all depends if you want to do alot of tuning, or just fly. DA all the way.

RE: DA 100 or 3W 106 for Carden 35% Edge

My opinion is based on flying in colorado at a mile high where the air is thinner and power to weight ratios are critical. Lots of guys here fly both engines and both perform well. Almost no one here would argue that 3w has more power and low end torque. DA is more reliable and usually runs well right out of the box. 3w requires more fiddling and a longer break in but when running right will give more raw power. Lots of guys compare prop and rpm on the ground but the engines unload differently in the air. The power curve is different. DA generates it power at higher RPM, which is less desirable for some types of flying. Engines turning the same on the ground will fly the same plane differently in the air. For most purposes the DA will be dependle and provide adequate power. If all out 3D is what you want and the most power and low end torque is what you need go 3W. The price you may pay is more time fiddling. BME compares to neither engine in power, the are weak by comparison and would be a poor choice for any 35% plane.

RE: DA 100 or 3W 106 for Carden 35% Edge

All the tuning I ever do with my 3Ws is tweak it from the factory settings, and after I set the needles at 4 gallons after switching to synthetic, tweak one more time, and I am done, and dont mess with them. Both are good motors in my opinon, true the 3Ws are a little more finicky than the DA, and take more time to break in. Most people just dont have enough patience for the 3W, and I am sure DAs customer service has a lot to do with them selling a lot of motors. To me, 3W is the corvette, the hot rod that requires a little TLC, and DA is the reliable Cadillac.

But....this thread is about which one for a Carden 35%, and after seeing the video of the one with the DA fly, there is a possibility I may try one.

On another note, I sold my BME 110 because I needed the weight up front for the carden, however I did see one run 2 weekends ago that my buddy has, had 4-5 gallons through it, and turned a Menz 28x10 pretty well @6400 rpm.

    Razorback,
Both engines are great and reliable but, I would go with the 3W . It just a little smoother running than the DA. But its a hard descision to make I know.

I saw a 110 go today and it seems to run well. However, the cardens are relatively heav and, like you said, you'll need the weight up front anyway. For what it's worth I have seen a 106 fly a Carden Edge 35% and it certainly flew it well until it crapped out in a 15' harrier. Fortunately the Cardens can take a hit. Here's a pic of it - owned and flown by Kevin Miller. One of the best looking Edges I have seen.

I have a Carden 35% edge with a da100....................Ive had a 3w in the past......will NOT have one again..................EVEN IF the 3w106 IS a few hundred rpm more than a da..........who cares..........I want my airframe in one piece thankyou very much and if I NEED more power I will prop it for a higher rpm...........after using the da first hand I would be CRAZY to even think about a 3w..........sorry but THAT is my experience.

RE: DA 100 or 3W 106 for Carden 35% Edge

Lets imagine a little situation shall we with .............................hmmmmm

Spring........nice warm sunny days and IMAC season just about to start..........as reported several times on rcu this happens...

My 3w106 has been REALLY strong so far 6400 on a mej 28x10 until the last few flights when it has started dying half way through the flight............can any of you guys help?

Well then back comes the usual assortment of answers.............too rich too lean are you using baffles check the head temp what ignition do you have the carb plate may be warped what did you break it in with what amount of oil are you using is your ignition on 4.8v or six and finally................... well Ive never had a problem with 3w

Does ANY of this sound at all familar?

In desperation as you send the thing back to the man you bought it from.............now it starts........cant find anything wrong with the engine.........or YES ITS REPAIRED and you get your engine back and put it back in the model..................this of course has taken a few weeks by the time you strip and install the engine and talked about warranty and shipping etc

DEADSTICK.................THUMP.........sickening silence and huge rush as ANGER swells inside!

    ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

OKOK now there are obviously guys out there who have great success with 3w and good luck too em!

I simply cant afford to take a chance like that and prefer to fly an engine I am 100% confident in........END OF STORY!!
