Default 40% Carden CAP or 40% Carden Giles 300

So... I'm giving serious consideration toward moving into 40% from my H9 33% planes. I may have an opportunity to get my hands on a Carden CAP or a Giles. Both equally equipped with 8411's DA150 and a pretty straight forward build sheet. One note, the Giles is modified with a 3D tail group.

I have been flying for a few years and progressing into 3D (wanna-be). Not real strong interest in IMAC, just flick'n sticks and scaring the heck out of myself (well sometimes).

I don't have any real experience with either planes, nor have I flown a Carden before. So...Watcha think?

Get the Cap... I own two currently and lost a highly modified model a while back, it simply gave up, it succumbed to airframe stress. It was a sight straight and level flight at a reasonable speed and a HUGE KABOOM, the right wing panel exploded off the airframe. The Caps can tumble like no others. If your looking for a 3D trainer neither of these is a good choice, IMO. Edges are hard to beat in this area.

The Giles is heavily loaded comparatively; if they were lighter it would be a keeper. Problem is a full scale Giles is small, accordingly a 40% model is small, specifically wing area and since they carry around the same components and weights as their larger brethren their not all that, IMO...

It all depends where it'll weigh in at. Right now I'm rebuilding a 46% Giles G-200 and it's looking to come in at 36lbs. That's hard to beat when you start to compare weights. The builder can make or break a plane. Weight is a major factor in aerobatics. Just something to think about.

Neo, you're right weight is a KEEN factor with this model as well as all others; lighter models just fly better typically.

Here’s the problem with the Carden Aircraft 40% G-300. These specs are typical of many 35% models, maybe a little overweight on a head to head comparison.

Wingspan 106"
Length 100"
Wing Area 2200"
Weight 33-35 lbs.

As you can note the wing area is typically 300 inches plus smaller than others in this category. Together with the payload required to rig this model it becomes heavy metal. I have seen several of these built by experienced modelers, albeit it was years ago now. I don't recall any of them being much less than 38lbs..

Now if you could keep it light it would be a killer model, IMO. With today’s lighter engines, stronger servos and lighter batteries maybe you get one down to a reasonable weight. Heck maybe the BME Extreme 110 would be the ticket...

Here's the kicker..........on my 46%, I'm going to run an older 3W-160B4. It a lot heavier than the 150cc's on the market today, but the weight was needed in the nose. IF the plane wasn't a scale unit..............I would have cut into the tail to take some weight out. I know that another 1 or 2 lbs could have been saved. But I didn't want to mess up the nice rounded fuse and all so I settled on it. Just imagine that plane at 34lbs........that would be fun. We have 2 Carden Giles-300's at the field I fly at. I have flown one of these to small for 40% overweight planes with not enough wing area, and I liked it so much I had to have one of these for myself. These planes fly great. Its a "hot rod" and they will 3D. The plane is typical Carden, its heavier that most others, but doesn't fly like it. I have built all of Cardens stuff and I went with this one because its kinda rare and different. For all out 3D I agree with the Edge thing or Cap but the Giles has a nitch also, its a Carden. As soon as this crazy Northern Indiana weather gets to where I can paint, this one will fly also, IMO, Walt

Hey, looks pretty nice KLOTZ. I know the CAP I am looking at comes in at 38lbs, not sure about the Giles. I agree with you also about the Giles standing out. I like the short-stout stance of the Giles, gives it kinda an attitude. The overall size to weight thing does stick in my mind as a "natural" warning.... feathers fly better than bricks....

Id assume that the Cap would be more 3D capable and with a beautiful 3W 150 I would take it over the Giles anyday

I flew one of the Giles that Klotz flew. It's for sale in the RCU classifieds. It weighs 34 lbs with a 3W-150. The owner doesn't do 3D, but the airplane flies very well. The wingloading is similar to the 35% Extras.
