Default Carden 35% Edge 540 build- Revived

Well I started my Edge last year but with 2 kids I found it went much slower than expected. So I here I am back at it. I have been building and flying radio controlled airplanes for 20+ years, but this Carden is my first big one. I must say I have struggled with this build due to my inexperience and will have many more questions for everyone. Tonight I glued on the leading and trailing edges to the wings and hope to get the wings mounted this weekend.

Here is what it looks like so far.

Thanks Steve...

First question - Just wodering what you guys would suggest for the rudder tray. I willl be using 2 Hitec 5955TG's. I was looking at the new SWB Self Adjusting Servo Tray's.

FYI... The pictures above show the top and bottom on the fuse but nothing is glued yet.

What would you suggest for the tray?
What is the best way to layout the pull/pull lines and cut the exit holes in the back (Should I use the plans, etc...)?
What type of lines should I use (Once again I have never worked on this big stuff so it all new to me - my biggest so far was a .60 size)

Looking forward to you responses.

Regards, Steve

Hi, Steve.

First, keep the tail on this airplane light as it can come out tail heavy if not carefull. As far as servo trays, call Scott at SWB, he has a "carden tray" it comes with a small print that shows where to install it. He also has a drilling jig that clamps to the back of the fuse and will make the job a lot easier, let him know you need the "drill fixture". If you have any questions let me know, I've built a lot of cardens and can help you out. Good luck with the airplane.

I would suggest the same. I used the rudder tray from John at Aeroprotect. It worked great.
The SWB tray works great too and the drill jig really helps. I made my own drill jig.
Once you have decided on what tray and rudder horn and have them in hand you can set them on the top view
of the plans and draw connecting line to see where they exit the fuse.
I used the SWB motor mount too on my 35% Extra

If you want to make your own jig here is what I did. I took a piece of 1" hard wood about 2"w x 3" long.
how do I explain this? ummm. Drill a centered and straight small hole from one end to the other in the 3" direction(so 1/2" in from one edge of the 1" side, and 1" form the top or bottom edge on the 2" side and then through the 3" length) does that make sense?
then I laid this piece length wise over the top view of the plans so the hole I drilled is lined up with the pull pull cable I drew on the plans where the pull pull cable would exit the fuse. I made marks on the piece to match the angle of the fuse. Then use a band saw to cut along this line.
there is your drill jig.
Geez, that was a lot of explaining for something so simple.

anyway, good luck.
I've made this offer to other guys. My 35% Extra was my first giant scale and I took a lot of construction photos.
if you would like I can email you a zip file with all the photos. Some may be helpfull....but you can find lot's of pictures on the web too at John Mitchell's Aeroprotect dite, Bob Hudson's site, Ivan Kristensen's

Just wondering... Other than installing the rudder tray and determining the layout of the pull/pull, what else should I do before I glue the turtle deck and bottom on?

Should I glue a tube in for radio wires? If so, what size (3/4"?)
Antenna tubes? if so, how many and were?

Anything else I should do before I close it all up?

Thanks again... Steve

Hi Steve I use a 5/8 paper tube for the servo wires. I made the tube into a Y at the end so I can easily push the wires from either side. I have my ant. tube glued to the top of the turtle deck. Have you set the stab incedence, installed the hard point mount for the removable stab and the mounting for the tail wheel?

Well of course everything takes longer than anticipated... I finally got the wings set at "0" and mounted. I had to adjust the tube for the stabs a bit and got that glued in. Next I will be setting them at "0" and screwing them in.

Question...

What is the best way to drill the hole for the 1/2" dowel that secures into the tube? I was thinking of a sharpened 1/2" brass tube for a drill bit. It's only cutting through 1/16" balsa sheeting and a little foam.

Now my wife knows why I was so excited about buying this large glass table for our morning room...

Thanks, Steve

Hey Steve, the best way is to not use the dowel and bolt into the stab tube. Install another hard point and bracket towards the rear of the stab. Much simpler , finding the hole in the tube at the field is a PITA , the bolt does not like to stay in and the tube may strip sooner or later. Keep up the good work.

Well... I have been working on the Edge, just slowly!

I finally got the wings and Stab mounted. Tonight I cut the elevators and fin out and started to cap the leading and trailing edges. I was very hesitant in cutting the surfaces out as it was my first time. I double, triple, etc... checked my markings and then fired up the band saw. I think they came out pretty good.

I ordered the SWB pulley rudder tray, DA engine mount, Ohio tail wheel assem., and the fuse tubes for the servo wires. Hopefully I have everything to close it up soon.

Till next time...

Steve

I just recieved my rudder tray(pulley version) from SWB. I haven't opened up the hardware packs yet but it looks like he includes everything needed to hook up the rudder. Is the steel cable he includes ok, or should I look to get something else to go back the rudder. I was planning on installing Dubru antenna tubes as guides.

Thanks - Steve

I had a pretty productive night last night, well at least for me...

I got the rudder cable exit holes drilled ( SWB's drill guide is nice) and the Dubro antenna tube installed, tail wheel assembly mounted, and the leading/trailing edges attached to the fin/rudder.

Hopefully this weekend I can start the tail hinging.

Please feel free to share any tips/suggestions as this is my first plane larger than a .60 size.

Thanks, Steve

Default RE: Carden 35% Edge 540 build- Revived

Kent, I like Steve, have taken more than a year to get back on my 35% Carden Edge. I spent a month getting the front end setup for KS canisters for my DA 100. I'll try to get some pictures later this week. I got frustrated on the kit when I had so much trouble gettng the stab tubes to align correctly but I finally got it.

Now my question is what do you mean about installing another hard point near the rear of the stab? That's where the servo goes. How can their be enough room? Can you provide some pictures that show your installation?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Bobby dont worry about taking so long, I've been working on my Carden Cap 35% for over two years now. Since then I have collected a Carden Cuda and 40% Carden Edge to build. Also some W Hare ARFs, this is where I got the idea of the two hard points to hold the stabs on . The Cap was done before I relized I should have done it this way. There is plenty of room beside the servo for another hard point.

I did put a 440 bolt in the stab tube on the Cap, but sanded down a dowel to insert into the tube for the bolt to hold on to. After hardening the threads with thin CA there is a good bit of friction on the bolt now.

There are plenty of picks on-line that show how the arfs are done with two hard points.

Aaaah Soo, as they say. Thanks for responding so quickly. Yes, I'm currently flying a WildHare Extra 260 and the stabs are like you describe. The big difference between the Carden Edge and all of the other planes that I have/built is that the Edge will have KS canisters in it. Should be much quieter that standard DA mufflers!!

Had a good couple nights..

I got the DA 100 mounted - unfortunately it's not mine, I borrowed it from a friend for mounting purposes. (Thanks Joe! - maybe he will foget I have it)

I hinged the elevators and shaped the bevels. I was pleasantly surprised how easy the bevels were using the Master Airscrew plane. I was able to get within a 1/32" of the line then I hit it with my long sanding bar to straighten out.

Not sure whats next, but I think I can start assembling the fuse (Top, bottom, fin, etc...)

It's been several days since I update this post, but I have been working pretty steady into the night/mornings.

I got the fin and fin fairing glued on, bottom decks, top deck, and hinged and beveled the rudder. The fairing was kinda challenging, but like everything if I take my time it will come out pretty decent. I also hade a tough time visualizing the fin bevel were it juts out to meet the fuse sides. I just started with my plane and then long sanding bar and it came out good.

Couple more larger steps to complete (Cowl and hatch) and I can then work on the Servo installation/setups etc...

Thanks, Steve

You are making great progress! I got the incidenses (incidenci?) set on the stabs last Sunday/Monday. That was my biggest stumbling block before and is wyy I stopped working on the plane in the first place. I don't know why but I did. Wierd huh?

Bobby,

I know the feeling, there were a couple stages that caused me some delay. Fortunately I have had a few people that have been very helpful with answering questions for me.

Please post some pictures if you can, I would love to see your progress.

My progress may slow down soon as I can only go so long with 3 hours of sleep a night. Between this, work, and my kids I haven't slept much. If only I could figure out a way to add more time in my day's...

I worked on the hatch tonight. I got a few suggestions from a friend that worked out very nicely - thanks Kevin!

Tomorrow I will glue the hard points in for the mounting screws and glue on the sheeting. I have to fit the canopy and then it looks like the cowl is next.
